It's funny, that red lantern that the switchman is using is quite familiar to me. My Dad too one, a kerosene version, set it up so it had a light bulb in it. We had a workshop in the back yard, and it was a good 80 feet away from the back of the house. Dad wired that signal lantern to the outside of the workshop. When we were in there we'd turn that red light on so Mom knew that at least one of us was out in the workshop. There was no wondering where we were. If I ever get a place that has a workshop again, that is one of the first things I am going to have wired into the outside. An homage to my parents.

A fascinating film about track renewal, probably 1930's at a guess. See how many doing manual work wore a collar and tie. (Could it be for the camera?)
Points: the terminology for track junction, or direction change. In other countries I've heard it refered to as 'slips' or 'tressles.'

Fabulous photos Daniel, I love those engine sheds. Today, my wife was rummaging around in her favourite vintage market when she came across this book.



Tucked inside the dust sleeve was a treasure trove of railway yesteryear. A menu from The Flying Scotsman, note the pre-decimal price of twelve shillings and six pence.



This next picture is the front of a picture postcard, the following picture is the handwritten message home. Note the old one penny postage stamp with the head of King George on it. The rest are more or less self explanatory.
