Vintage Things That Have Disappeared In Your Lifetime?

Common flashlight bulbs are no longer sold in any store in my town. Not at the big-box hardware store, not at either grocery store, not at the drug store, not anywhere I could find. I don't want an LED bulb, I don't want a lantern bulb, I don't want to buy a disposable flashlight, I just want a plain 2.5 volt flange-base bulb for the plain Ray-O-Vac flashlight that hangs on a hook in my kitchen.

After my fruitless expedition I rooted around in my junk drawer and found a loose one from the last time I bought bulbs. Which is the way it always goes.

I grabbed a pack recently, only to discover after I got them home that they were for one of those 18v rechargeable flashlights. As you would imagine, a couple of 'D' batteries didn't do much for them.

Driving a car with your hands at ten and two on the steering wheel. I was taught to drive that way, I've been driving that way for almost forty years, and now I find out I'm doing it all wrong. You're now supposed to drive with your hands at eight and four. Which is uncomfortable and clumsy for me, and I refuse to do it. So there.

That's what they tell me, but I'd rather have my arm broken by an airbag than lose control of my car on an icy road and get killed because I can't control the wheel properly.

I've tried to switch. My 15 year old learning-to-drive-daughter keeps reminding me. As soon as I stop thinking about it, it's right back to 10 and 2.

breaking my wrists & hold on to my head ? :eeek:


The way some folks drive...that helmet...just might not be a bad idea
And probably because there's no airbag...but did you noticed the position
of her hands while holding on to the steering wheel ? !

Shame Kyle Busch couldn't do that for his legs. Meh not like I haven't broken my wrists before by being struck by a Lincoln Towncar so I'll risk it if I'm ever in an accident in my ranger pickup. Might keep me off my computer for awhile, ehh maybe I'll just dig out my old copy of dragon speak instead. LOL

I split the difference. 9 and 3 works for me.

I thought it was less because you'll break your wrists and more because the airbag will force your arms into your face and bash your face in.

Still 10 and 2. Or rather 11 and 3; after years of practice I got out of driving at 8 and 1. Driving with your left hand closer to your body is something lefties have chronic problems with, but it supposedly does have a significant disadvantage when it comes to steering.

...not that I miss it, but I haven't balanced a checkbook in several years. The only reason I ever write a check is because my daughter is in high school and activities still ask for them.

...I used to use a big ledger checkbook with three checks per page. I remember seeing my dad use them and it seemed like the right thing to do. There was also a check register right on the page where the you detached the check. Do they even sell those anymore?

Speaking of driving and hand placement and vintage things that have disappeared ...

When I was a teenager, I drove a '62 Plymouth (no power steering and no seat belts). When dating, I NEVER had both hands on the wheel.

Are there any new cars with bench seats, or have those disappeared? I'm sure you can't put a "necking knob" on the steering wheel of a new car. What are young dating people supposed to do these days? There was nothing like taking a tight curve in that old '62 and having your girl slide across the seat and into your arm. That used to be called "opportunity corner." Yep, there sure is a lot that has disappeared.

In a real meat axey situation old time racing drivers would let go of the wheel completely to "dive for the cellar" in other words, lie on the floor and roll under the dash board. Down there with your back braced against the dash you could survive practically anything including a complete roll over.

A real pro tip was to wait for a minute after all the crashing and banging stopped before you came out. That silence did not necessarily mean the accident was over. If you were going fast enough it could mean the car was flying through the air.
