Seat belts! How about brake lights?

Nearly thirty years ago I received a several of tickets over the span of a few months for not having brake lights on my Ford, although I was religiously using proper hand signals. Of course they were thrown out in court, but lo and behold, after the passage of the post-911 snoop laws in 2010I found that my state would not renew my license, for Alabama maintained that I had a violation which had not been addressed. I dimly remember being pulled over when travelling, but a letter from the porsecutor was supposed to have fixed the matter back in 1985.

I am still trying to straighten matters out. Alabama claims a moving violation for no brake light on a 1916 Ford, which, of course had no brake lights (a Coal Oil brake light would be a difficult thing to manage) and will not release unless I admit the violation and pay nearly $3000 in fines and fees. Even so, the BMV there does admit that it is not a violation to drive an automobile which pre-dates 1935 which is not so equipped, but they claim that they can do nothing about the violation.

Try writing the attorney general.

Really? I've been playing my Christmas and Big Band records every year since before my kids were born, so they've always known about them. Now all my son buys are LPs, because he says they're pure.... whatever that means [huh]

I was at a garage sale and my son, who is five, remarked that there was a bunch of records there. The woman was surprised that he knew what records were because her grandchildren don't. :p The fact that I have a jukebox that he plays might have something to do with it.

Can we add pineapple upside down cake to the list? I was surprised. The other day I took a notion to make a pineapple upside down cake for the first time in 20 years. I mentioned it to a few people. The old ones said "I haven't had pineapple upside down cake in years". Those under 50 said "what is a pineapple upside down cake?" They never heard of it.

That brings back memories. A friend of my grandmother used to make the best pineapple upside down cakes.

Closest thing nowadays is the Winchells near me that has pineapple upside down muffins. I must say that it does make me strangely nostalgic to want to whip up some tuna casserole made with honest-to-God hand crushed potato chips as well! :p

I can remember back as a kid that the Pineapple upside down cake was the rage, housewives were discussing this unique cake. (It went viral.)

I have my mom's clear pyrex baking dish that she made it in.
It was the cake version of the "Visible V8" for me.

I'm pretty amazed by this. How can people not know what pineapple upside down cake is? Now I want pineapple upside down cake.

I'm convinced it's part of the "not cooking and baking culture" we have in current society. It's easier to buy a cake loaded with additives than it is to stir together some flour, eggs, sugar, and oil, dump it in a pan, and leave it in a hot oven for 30 minutes. Even a boxed cake seems beyond most people.

Between men who can't build or fix things and women who can't cook or sew, we as a society are now equal -- equally useless.

Well then just make some. I'll be over in 45 minutes. :p
Here:
1/4 cup butter
2/3 cup packed brown sugar
9 slices pineapple in juice (from 14-oz can), drained
9 maraschino cherries without stems
1 1/3 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup granulated sugar
1/3 cup shortening
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup milk
1 egg
Heat oven to 350°F. In 9-inch square pan, melt butter in oven. Sprinkle brown sugar evenly over melted butter. Arrange pineapple slices over brown sugar. Place cherry in center of each pineapple slice. In medium bowl, beat remaining ingredients with electric mixer on low speed 30 seconds, scraping bowl constantly. Beat on high speed 3 minutes, scraping bowl occasionally. Pour batter over pineapple and cherries. Bake 50 to 55 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Immediately place heatproof serving plate upside down over pan; turn plate and pan over. Leave pan over cake a few minutes so brown sugar mixture can drizzle over cake; remove pan. Serve warm. Store cake loosely covered.

I usually double(except the fruit) this but you can do what you want. I like a fair amount of cake. This will make it sort of flat if you don't double it. :p

Yuck! I hate box cakes. They always use too much baking soda or baking powder and I can taste it.:eusa_doh:
