I remember the day they came to replace the mechanical price computers on our gas pumps because the existing units wouldn't go above 99.9 cents per gallon. Until they got around to us, we had to set the pumps to display the price per *half* gallon, and you had to pay twice the "total" amount shown.

When I started doing the books for the station in high school, the price per gallon was around 60 cents. It passed the dollar mark here in the summer of 1979, and the panic was on.
