Vintage Suit Stinks

Actually, I'm using the rest of the Smirnoff my parents had in the freezer to get the stink out of my teal Hart, Schaffner, Marx jacket...so we'll see if that statement is true!
I've never had any problems with Febreeze breaking stuff down but I've found that it is absolutely powerless in the ridding of vintage underarm stink. As soon as you get active and warm up the suit, the stink is bound to return.

Another trick I've learned after many years of collecting is putting said funky item in a sealed bag with a dryer sheet for a couple of days! Then air it out!
Don't laugh..it works!

To be honest, I've only used Fabreeze on shirts , then sent them to the cleaners. The combination of both usually solves all problems! I'm sure it isn't the best for the fabric, but then neither is the drycleaning!

You can also put the suit in a closed bag or airtight box with a few cupfuls of baking soda for a few days...change the old soda with fresh every day or so...the baking soda will absorb the odors.

It's a miracle!!!! My teal jacket is saved!!!! Thank you, Wildroot! I thought I could never wear that jacket because of the smell- well now, it's just faintly old smelling. The B.O. is like 90% gone!
We'll see how it holds up after I wear it out. I hope the body heat doesn't reactivate it.

I believe it! That is another good way to kill an oddor! Dryer sheets is also good to keep in your closets to keep the moths away!

I'm happy to hear the Vodka/water mix worked Ray! Just little tricks one picks up along the way! Always happy to share them!

One thing to remember, old wool will always smell like old wool. You can take the coat out of the 40's but you can't take the 40's out of the coat!lol

I'd like to hear how well it works for you Ray!

True, my Royal Deluxe Stetson Homburg has a wonderful old smell, like an old radio. I wouldn't want to get rid of that.
:eusa_clap

Man, there are few smells that I really enjoy, they are as fallows and all fall within the same family.

The smell you smell when...

Vacuum tubes warm up on an old radio.

Sitting in an original car pre 1960.

opening old suit cases.

wearing vintage clothes.

Opening the door to an untouched room on the Queen Mary.... Hmmmmm, vintage ocean liner fresh!

Using Moth balls.

Those are great smells... they are the smell of the past! For some reason, I find it a comforting smell. Man, I should find a way to bottle it and sell it, I would call it:

Mohair No. '35 lol

I wonder if Everclear would work well, since it's a higher proof. (It might be more of a neutral alcohol than some cheap vodkas)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Everclear_(alcohol)

That stuff had better work because it sure isn't good for actually drinking. It smells like drycleaning fluid so it might as well be used as such.
Just keep anything you use it on away from an open flame a good while after using that stuff.

J
