I checked in with David Gibson at VS to get an eta on a small repair. Like so many other businesses, the pandemic has caused him all sorts of problems. He’s still making hats and chipping away at his backlog. To rub a little salt in his wounds, he was evacuated for a couple of weeks due to wildfires. He said he grabbed up everyone’s hats and fled. I guess it’s understandable that he’s a bit behind.

An hat David finished up for me last winter/spring:

There’s no doubt that he makes a fine hat in the VS tradition.

I sent him a hat for a sweatband replacement back in June, but he told me then that he was running months behind.

If I was located in the western US I would court the refurb business. For some weird reason I find it very satisfying.

The new website is up, but it’s pretty spartan. The off the rack hats are gone and there is no mention of the old Pine Street address which makes me suspect there isn’t a store front anymore.

I wish David good luck.

David is a good guy, and I too wish him the best. Very hard to maintain a storefront for custom hat makers these days

I was wondering about the economics of a store front.
While the ready to wear hats provide sales/revenue but as a one man shop waiting on customers takes away custom hat making time. At least Art had Marsha to handle the walk ins...

Just purchased this beauty from Rabbit: Blue smoke beaver with a 2" navy ribbon and 2 3/8" brim.

I never would have considered the blue smoke as a custom order; but I gotta tell you, it is one luscious color: Mostly a light gray with just a hint of blue! The colors of the hat in photo are quite true to life. If this isn't a Hall of Famer, I don't know what is.

This is the first VS I've laid my hands on, and I now understand what all the fuss is about. Can't wait for the custom order I have with VS for one in Dove, which should be up in line in a few weeks (I hope).

I'm guessing the crown height on Ky's hat is around 5-3/4" He likes a tall crown.
