Here's the Zebulon theater in Cairo, Georgia, where the baseball player Jackie Robinson was born (notice the movie on the marquee, "42", about the early life of JR...it was a coincidence that we were there that weekend, when we were visiting)...

Speaking of roadside, here's all that left of his birthplace...and this spot is reeeally isolated....

I stayed at the Boots Motor Court in 1992 (the sign then read "Boots Motel) -- I stayed in room #6, where Clark Gable once spent the night.

I wish I could say I'd stayed at the Wagon Wheel on that same trip, but I didn't know about it until I stumbled upon it (too early in the day to stop for the night). What a great motel it was back then (and still is, I hope and trust).

I didn't stay at the Boots as it was too early in the day. Ate lunch next door at the Pancake Hut. Recommend it for coffee only! The "Chicago Band Box" was really neat to see.

The Wagon Wheel was disappointing. Room was very clean and redone not that long ago. I picked a single bed room, cheapest. Talk about small!!! Bed was a full size against the wall and one side which allowed about 18" on the other side. Only furniture was a small nite stand. It was also $25 more per nite than the local Motel6.

I tried 2 more Route 66 motels on the trip. Same thing, small rooms, product of the 50's design? Pricy compared to the newer chains. Major concern for my travel budget. The signs however are GREAT!!! Would have loved to seen more of them at nite!

Highly recommend the "EZ 66 Guide for Travelers" by McClanahan if planning a Route 66 excursion. Plus lots of internet surfing first!

In 1992, I traveled to all 48 contiguous states during a four-month, 22,000 road trip that saw me traversing the entire length of Route 66 from Lake Michigan in Chicago to the Santa Monica pier. And I did tons of research before that trip, as you might expect.

Skyvue, Now that is a ROAD TRIP!!! 22k and 4 months!!

By chance did you do a ride report on your excursion?

By the time I got to Rte 66 in Missouri I had been gone about 6 weeks and was starting to get a case of gethomeitis. Which unfortunately caused me to miss / skip some of the places I had planned to stop at.

Am leaving soon to Arizona and south Utah. Plan is to take the time to find some cool roadside places and post the pic's here.

Ohhhh yeah...now we're cookin!

I can remember when the last of the old style golden arches was razed around here. Hated to see that. Used to be one up in Huntsville, still had "Speedy" on the sign if I'm remembering correctly. Don't know if it's still surviving or not, been a few since I was that way.
