I'm planning a short road trip soon down the first portion of Historic ROUTE 66, from it's start in Chicago to St. Louis. I live in Indy so that would be just a big triangle for me. Any suggestions for not-to-miss stops that might be of interest to a fellow Lounger?

I haven't been down that stretch and it's been years since I did the Missouri route. You might check with the local Route 66 Associations. They will have maps and locations of interest.

Have a great trip!

I have to laugh every time I pass by this sign on Meridian Street near downtown Indianapolis. I believe the place, Berringer's Tavern, is now permanently closed, but local word is it was once a great place to eat.

The Summit Inn on Route 66 near Oak Hills, CA is gone due to wildfire. :(
This year has been particularly bad in southern California. Wildfires are a common occurrence here this time of year, but the number of them combined with the drought conditions have made it extremely difficult for firefighters (with limited resources) to gain some form of control.

My heart goes out for those effected by the fires! We had several big fires a few years ago, a couple of friends lost their houses, very tragic.

Henne Hardware.

Visited a nearby small town hardware store that has been around since 1857
and is still in business.

Still retains the wooden display shelves and floors with high ceilings.
Plenty of old fashion products are available.

One of the best features is the friendly folks who will introduce themselves,
chat with you and call you by name and without hassling you about buying.

And when was the last time you can remember parking in the front of the store
without parking meters.
