There used to be a great British Colonial-themed Bar in San Francisco, but I can't for the life of me remember the name.

Anyone in CA know what I'm referring to?

The Maritime Hotel in New York City: insanely, unforgivably expensive for a room BUT certainly worth a visit for cocktail-drinking purposes.

Lady Day, Fedora Gent, Magneto and I have gone several times to Bourbon and Branch, a speakeasy in San Francisco that, while not genuine and old like Lizzie Maine's favorite spot, at least tries to be interesting. I don't have pictures on my person, but you normally must make a reservation, get a password, and then speak the password through a slot (yes, a slot) in the door. There is a "library" by which, when it is open, you can sometimes enter, whose walls are lined with old books. I think purists might find it a bit kitschy but I enjoy it.

My wife and I spent the evening at Bemelmans Bar at the Hotel Carlyle here in NYC after our wedding on December 8. It's like a trip back in time (except when the bill arrives -- then you feel as though you've rocketed ahead in time a couple of centuries).

The walls of Bemelmans are lined with murals of frolicking animals painted by bar namesake and former Carlyle Hotel resident Ludwig Bemelmans, the illustrator perhaps best known as author and illustrator of the Madeline series of children's books.

They always have a pianist playing standards there, and on certain nights, as on the Saturday night we were there, the ante is upped to the level of a trio.

The pianist graciously fulfilled my request for Nat Cole's "That's All," a favorite of ours (it'd be sung by a friend of mine at the wedding that afternoon), and dedicated to us, resulting in applause from the packed house, and he even made it a point to come over and congratulate later at our table.

It's a great spot, one that's received raves from every person I've ever taken there. But it is pricey.

This is from the Carew Tower in Cincinnati. They have a great restaurant called the Palm Court inside the Hilton which is attached to the building. The building was built in 1929 and has some great examples of art deco work on it's first 3 floors (they ran out of money and did the rest of them in plain brick because of the Depression).

I'm fortunate because I work in this building so I get to see it every day. These are a couple of pictures I found of it, but there are plenty more out on the web that show the beautiful detail.

but there is a place in chi town called Gioco Speakeasy. it really was a speakeasy back during prohibition. as a matter of fact i learned about it when i wnet to the Optimo Hats party this past november...

Here in Chicago there's pretty much a bar on every corner. Most of them date to before the Second World War, so most of them have intact (and unwashed) vintage details, like long oak art deco bars.

Here's a few in the Ukrainian Village/Wicker Park neighborhood:

Rainbo Club. Even the urinals are 1930's. Great woodwork, and a u-shaped bar. Always a good time at the Rainbo.

Gold Star. Used to be a Polish cathouse until the 1980's.

Tuman's Alcohol Abuse Center. Recently bought out, the art deco bar survived the acquisition.

Chip Inn. Old-school working man's bar where there's always a guy passed out drunk, slumped over the bar.

Beachwood Inn. Despite the hideous condo development that went up in front of it, this bar still retains its vintage charm.

Inner Town Pub. As the owner gets older, his hair dye gets darker. Nice Elvis-style sideburns, too. Did he really have an affair with the Muffin Lady?

The Hideout. Former factory-owned bar that would cash your paychecks. Great place to see music. Nice woodwork with a hunting lodge vibe. I think there's a fish mounted on the wall. I saw Andrew Bird's Bowl of Fire there for the first time. I think I made his girlfriend throw up.

If I can get my stupid digital camera to work I'll go out a few weekends and take pictures. Honestly, I don't know why there hasn't been a coffee table book titled "The Art Deco Bars of Chicago."

Maybe once I post the photos I can relay my story of how my bike ended up in my kitchen, and one of my socks was missing when I woke up after a long night of visiting my bartender friends.

Panns in Los Angeles opened in 1958 and it still owned by the same family.Not much has changed except the prices. Great food!!! You can see it in Pulp Fiction and Bewitched. Located at 6710 LaTijera Blvd

And for those in Australia it's hard to go past the Hydro Majestic in the Blue Mountains. A true step back in time.

The dome was built in Chicago and shipped to Australia in 1903
