Hi, I'm brand new to sports coats and would like a recommendation if possible to a vintage reproduction sports coat maker, if such a thing exists. I also don't know what to wear with a sports coat. Must I wear a tie? I'm going for 30s-40s. Thank you.

I should add I'm 6'2" and vintage clothing is usually not a viable option for me. Thanks.

What jacket size do you wear? 6'2" is taller, but not extraordinarily so. Unsless your jacket size is bigger than 44 or 46 you ought to be able to find some vintage here and there.

My chest is 40" so I wear a 42" jacket. Problem is, most vintage jackets in a 42, to the extent you can even find them, are cut for a man 2" shorter than me. Long of any size in a vintage garment is rare, in my experience. Yes, I could search and search and search for that one jacket I like that might fit me, or I can buy an off-the-rack reproduction that will probably last just as long and look great. I prefer the easy way.

I had heard of Magnoli and I will check them out, thanks.

Magnoli's is made to measure, if you are looking for off-the-rack try Germany's Juke Jive.

Great site, but I don't speak German. Is there an English language version? Thank you.

Well, it looks like you will have to go made-to-measure, or bespoke because nobody but nobody offers off-the-rack reproductions for sports coats. this is primarily because, unless you want something with rare details, plain ol' vintage sports coats are perhaps the easiest vintage garment to find, in any size. There is a market for off the rack reproduction short ricky jackets and 1940s-1950s leisure jackets, but not for sports coats. Why not just find modern sports coats that pass, like Ralph Lauren or something?

Checked out Magnoli and they had a lot of funny jackets, more like costumes than everyday wear, but they had one jacket with promise: the Professor Jacket. Does anybody own this one? Here's a link:

Some of his things are copies of movie costumes. Others are period patterns. I have two 'sport jackets' in addition to a half-dozen or so suits and vouch that in hand, they are certainly not costumey. They are well made (he farms the construction out to tailoring businesses in the Far East) and will fit well if you give him good measurements. I would caution that you must specify trouser leg widths particularly or you will likely get something a little narrower than you may want.

How do I see a real picture of this stuff? I'm not buying based on an artist's conception!

Marc is right. Sadly, the Peterman website, like their catalog, affects these wash drawings. I just bought the herringbone blazer and the chalk striped suit coat and they are very nice and look very much '30's. Nice material-Irish tweed herringbone and English-milled chalkstripe- and for the money, a steal compared to their original prices.
I would post pics if I was not tech challenged (see avatar for proof).
