I'm in the process of setting up a 40s private eye office in my studio. Still need a few details like Venitian blinds for the window, but it should be fun for both noir/pulp type shots and for pinup stuff. Tayva, should you find yourself heading out to the Barbary Coast and interested in shooting something dark and dangerous, do drop me a post.

One other thing I have run into along the lines of the misunderstanding of pinup, is when I mention I'm doing a pinup shoot, there is often immediate concern that I am shooting pornography....total bummer.

The private eye office sounds awesome! I can't wait to see some photos from that! I actually had a dream the other night that I did a shoot like that. But then again, that darned Flonase commercial always seems to be on late at night :)

Thanks immensley for the offer... hopefully I'll make it out that way soon. If I am, I'll definitely take you up on that offer.
Do you still have your Yahoo group? A bunch of mine disappeared some time ago and I could never find them again!

Oh man, I've totally been accused of doing pornography or similar.
When my husband's website launched two years ago, we put up a banner to my Yahoo group on the links page. I emailed his URL to a bunch of friends and family. Some relatives of mine saw the banner, clicked and thought because you have to sign up on Yahoo, that I had "something to hide"... haha. Needless to say, I got some dirty looks. Oh well ;-)

Haha, I can never remember his name, either! I had originally booked my shoot at the Lava Lounge in Hollywood (our good friend, Gary Twinn is manager). But they cancelled, as KTLA was doing a weekend long profile shoot on the place, as they were featuring the local Tiki bars. I didn't even know the Purple Orchid existed. I searched and searched the net, and finally came across some random Tikiphile site. They had one photo, it looked decent, and luckily Rebecca's husband (whatever his name is, lol!) said yes. I even offered him $100, and he declined. Hopefully by then, some of my prints may be up in there ;-)

Jitterbugdoll--- Thanks for sharing that link, it's rather interesting!

Everyone... while on the topic of Bernard of Hollywood... I have to dig it out (I just moved), but I have this weird pop culture magazine that someone gave to me that had a big article on him. It also disclosed a bit of his trade secrets!

New Photo Shoot

I received a proofs CD of my latest shoot in the mail today, and I wanted to share a few of the photos with you. This photographer is learning to work in Hurrel’s style, and I think some of the shots really reflect this (although I worked in a few pinups ;) ). What do you think?

It's just great how you got not only the clothes right but also the poses and attitude spot on. Not to mention the figure...

All in all, they are just totally jake.

First off... Superly done... bravo. Beautiful pictures and a beautiful girl...

I am a big fan of pin-ups from the 30-50's. Vargas, Evegreen, Thompson...

And magazines from the 40's/early 50's like Titter, Flirt, Whisper...

I think to add to your pictures, and this is only a sugestion from someone who enjoys early pin-ups...

You're kind of mixing the glamour look of say Bernard of HOllywood with the pin-ups of the 40's.

Except for the early work of Vargas, all the models have an either, "I caught you peeking, but it's Okay" look or, "I'm dressing and you're not there" look about them.

His later 40's girls all smiled at the viewer or were having fun.

Evegreen's and Thompsons stuff was all fun, smiles, winks, playing...even joking.

The actual photo mags.. titter, whisper...ect the girls lost some of the smiles and then started to turn mad. Most 50's photos the girls are mad/bad.

Then Hef came out in 53 and turned the whole thing around again.

I love the glamour shots you've done, esp. the couch one.. very hollywood. Don't change those you're spot on!

but I think you should do two versions of the ones where you're playing with say a garter or something. Do one like you have, but then do the same pose, but play to the camera a bit. Either Mad or Bad or just tease.

I think it would add to the look you're going for.

And just to re-clarify, I love the pictures I really do, I am only adding suggestions.

keep up the great work!

Shamus-Thanks for the complements and the suggestions. Have you seen the pictures I posted in this thread earlier? I normally do full-on 1940s pinup, but the new photographer contacted me to do a bit of Hollywood glamour. So...these pics were kind of an experiment. Actually, on the whole the shoot had a sort of vintage Vogue look to it--I loved the pics but felt they had a sort of 'fashion' edge to them, if that makes sense.

Anyway, here's a photo from another shoot with my usual photographer, for comparison. I actually specialize in that look/feeling you describe, and generally find that most people remark (without prompting) that that is the look I have achieved. But again, I am glad you appreciate the overall style and I do appreciate your comments:

This Elvgren was my inspiration:

These shots are awesome, particularly #3 in the first set. But would have to wholeheartedly agree with Shamus and your own assessment that they are kind of a mix bag with some elements of classic glamour and more contemporary fashion. If this guy/gal is just starting to work in pinup/glamour, he/she are off to a splendid start. Though, for the Hurrell look, he needs to work with harder, more directional lighting.

You, Dishy Dame, along with the great gams, have a marvelous profile....very Harlow'ish. And, indeed, the earlier shots with the army uniform are so totally 'spot on' as vintage pinup, we would all be hard pressed to suggest how to improve upon them.

Keep the images coming, Doll! ....but

I concur...

The army pics are fantastic! Dead On!

It's the photographer for sure not capturing either or of the time period.

I have an idea for a series...

Recreate classic paperback book covers from the late 40's. Early Dells or Pocket books.

If you're interested I can find some really great ones, usually with a girl, a shadowy man a telephone and a blunt instrument....

Wow--thanks filmnoirphotos! I do think this photographer has talent, and he is very open to my ideas/direction. It's interesting that you mention my Harlow-ish profile--we were actually planning to do a tribute to Jean, and are hoping to photograph in the lobby of an amazing 1920s apartment building.
I also find it interesting to see how many men notice my hair and makeup, and feel that it is accurate. This just goes to show that the men on these boards are very well-versed in all aspects of fashion! :)

BiltmoreBob--thanks for the wolf howl. We vintage girls appreciate that sort of complement! ;)

shamus--that is a great idea, and I would love to see a few book covers! Do post a few suitable ideas!

Thanks fifi! Too bad we don't live closer--we could borrow and swap from each other's closets with ease!

Ruby--I would pick up a book about Gil Elvgren. Elvgren was one of the most prominent and prolific Coca Cola Artists in the 1940s-60s, and most of what people associate with Coke advertisements was painted by him. In general, when you stop at a place (like Johnny Rockets, etc) decorated with Coke art, you are probably looking at one of his works!
