Vintage Personae

Hello friends,
So it's one thing to dress in fedoras and vintage suits and walk about town looking like a million bucks, but does anyone have a vintage attitude to go with it? How about a moniker? Maybe a whole identity to go with your 30's-50's wardrobe? It could be something simple, like having a different walk or a different talk while you're in vintage, or maybe you have a whole new mindset. Maybe there are some of us who never go back to our "normal" identities?

I like to think of it like so... if someone were to look at a picture of you in your vintage clothes, in a photograph that looked like it was from the period, what would said person think you were all about? I know I look at old pictures, and I think "Well he looks like an old banker", or "He looks like a delivery man". Do you base your ensemble around mimicking a certain occupation or lifestyle? I already know we'll have plenty of "adventurers" in here.

Well, I do, here's mine. When i'm wearing an old suit and hat, I become Jeremiah DeBlume, sly man about town. Socialite, pool shark rolleyes: ), gentleman, and slightly shady (in a admirable way). He is a writer, a traveler, a scholar, a musician, and maybe a little bit of a romantic.

Anyone else care to share so I don't feel like an idiot?

Well ... I've never felt like changing my monniker when decked out in vintage, but I do feel different. Not sure why; I just do.

Well because you look like you just stepped out of a time machine, that's why. It's because you can tell the people around you are all thinking you may be dressed differently, but no can say it's without style. That's what I like about vintage, especially suits. I can pretty much guarantee that when I walk in a room, I'll be the best dressed gentleman there. And i'm usually right.... not to be cocky or anything. And your name already sounds like it's from some old 1940's Pulp book or something.

Hmmm, yeah. Ya feel different.

Somehow. Like feeling a connection to a past era you never really knew, only heard about from those that did actually live in it. But there is a feeling that one gets from whatever vintage clothing one chooses to don.
Maybe it's like ghosts in a way? Some sort of energy that lingers in those old clothes? [huh]

Marc's name does have a pulpy sound to it. "Marc Chevalier: the Modern Knight" In the new issue he takes on the Crime Syndicate!

I would like to be a gentleman turned anonymous crime-fighter, then public trouble-shooter in San Francisco and finally semi-retired and living in Santa Rosa with my wife. There's more to it but should illustrate that I have thought too much about it.

Sadly, when people see me "decked out" they think I look like a ganster, G-Man or detective. Today, with my bow tie and vest, I was told I look like I should be working in an old movie house. I might have had my sleeve garters on at the time.

I wouldnt say that I'm a different person when I wear vintage... but its like a have a teeny bit more confidence and my normal personality gets amplified a little bit. However, I dont know if thats such a good thing. My normal personality is bright, cheerful, bubbly and I talk too much.

Hmmm, vintage persona? Nope ... surly surly surly ... same as always. Jus surly and well dressed. But then, i'm rarely not in vintage these days (collecting voraciously while i'm in the US). Vintage is my persona.

Hannibal Slim, eh? Haha, that's great. But again, I'm really not that great at pool. Now I want to get some more shots of me playing pool in vintage.

I'm glad i'm not as crazy as I initially suspected when I created this thread. Another thing I noticed about myself when i'm dressed up, I'm more nice and polite.

So, ok, since I may be a bit on the excentric side of life, I'm always dressed different from what people might call the "norm" but I guess you can say I'm just pretty retro.... Anyway, when I'm really dressed to the teeth with make up and all I'm for sure much more selfconfident. I guess I feel a bit like a mix of Louise Brooks and Greta Garbo with a little bit of Alla Nazimova lol

I'm with the Baron on this one. Since I never dress in modern fashion, I could easily say that my 40's personna and my ordinary self are one and the same.
I guess it's something akin to an eager young press photographer wanting to emulate Weegee. And when I'm wearing my favourite suit it's not much different because I always have a camera on me.

(And I just love putting a PRESS tag on my hat!)

Well, I often don't have an avenue (and more rarely, the funds) to dress vintage, so my better outfits tend to be more "vintage inspired." With my fedora and British-style shirts, I'm a bit of a throwback to the Golden Era explorers. I was getting a CD autographed by an artist the other day and he said I looked like I had just got back from Africa. :fedora:

But when I put on my fedora, my confidence always rises some. I step out of the house feeling like I'd just found a nameless wallet full of cash, breathe deep, and take stronger steps.

And Mr. Misanthropy, I gotta say, I got a kick out of your avatar.
