Is there a way of doing it without looking like a clown? I tend to just not kiss my boyfriend when wearing red lipstick!

As someone who is addicted to red and rarely wears any other shade, I highly recommend the long-wearing lipsticks like Cover Girl Outlast or Maybelline Superstay for just this situation (it just takes a bit of practice to get a comfortable feeling application.)

Hey, if a man gets bright red lipstick smeared on him it just means a dame thought he was worth a kiss. That is by definition a "good thing" tm And besides, that's why you carry a handkerchief.

I would hope most men give a bit of thought to what they wear on a first date, first impressions go both ways.

If you want a funny (to me anyway) parallel, over on the firearms forums I frequent one reoccuring thread question is whether someone who carries a gun every day should carry it on a first date. Unlike clothing, there are places you can't legally go while armed so the concern is having to explain why you can't go to that club on a whim or why you are putting something in the trunk. Or what happens if your date touches or bumps into the gun.

You think explaining "I like to dress in old clothes" is a difficult topic to broach? Try figuring out when and how to tell someone, essentially a stranger (no more than an acquaintance) something as private as the fact that you are and will be armed (which you don't want gossiped about for a number of reasons). I can only imagine it's like figuring out when to tell someone you have a 'social disease'. :eusa_doh:

Given the variety of peoples beliefs on the subject and how unlikely it is to just "come up" naturally in conversation, it can be tough. So I wouldn't worry so much about how he'll take your vintage lifestyle. (I know it's more than just a hobby for you Daisy :D )

Well, you might wonder why I'm posting right now, being that it's Thursday night and I'm supposed to be on my date. Unfortunately my date, Dave, got bogged down at work. Due to the bad storm we had yesterday he got behind on certain duties, he's a lawyer. Anyway, he let me know very early this morning that he would probably be working until late tonight. We have re-scheduled for Sunday night. I'm not at all upset, for he did give me ample notice, and did reschedule right away, so no worries that he's getting cold feet. This is actually a good thing on a few accounts. First of all it's freezing out and very icy. And now I have plenty of time to really figure out the perfect outfit.
I actually ordered a new dress a few days ago and paid a bundle for shipping in the hopes it would get here by tonight. It hasn't arrived yet but should surely be here for my date on Sunday. So, the delay is actually in my favor.

Jitterbug, I'm gonna go buy some long lasting lip color. Do you have a particular shade that you prefer. I'll definitely take your advice on practicing! I could think of a lot worse ways to spend my time! Provided that he wants to practice with me:)

I am really grateful for all of your responses, men included. I probably should have posted this in the OB. The advice from men on this topic is as equally as important as the advice from you ladies. It makes me feel great that I have so many gals and guys who understand and are willing to help me out. Sometimes I feel like I know you all so well, even though I haven't met most of you.
I was a bit worried about wearing a vintage outfit for this date. But, it's who I am. I'm not going to get all glammed up, but will definitely be in vintage. Unfortunately I haven't the slightest idea as to where we are going. I know it's for dinner, but I don't know where. So I'm gonna do my hair and make-up vintage, but tone it down. I think I'll be fine in a dress, but I still have a cute pencil skirt and pretty sweater laid out just in case I change my kind of made up mind at the last minute. I'm still definitely wearing FF, I see them as a way of being flirty. He might be intrigued by them.

Well, thanks again. I really am grateful for all of your advice, and am now much more confident in wearing vintage for this first date. He knows I wear it, so he might not be all that surprised. All of your advice is greatly appreciated:)

"Umm, I'm just happy to see you?" :p

A perfectly vintage thing to say in that situation...

In the spirit of a more militant Mae West, my stock reply to "Is that a gun in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?" is "Both".

Daisy, do you have a link to a photo of the dress you ordered?

I'm really excited for you! I think the outfit you have planned sounds lovely, and I'm sure your date will appreciate it.

Have a fantastic time!

Well, my date was Sunday night, and I must say it was quite the enjoyable evening.

We went for a great dinner at a very nice restaurant called Eastern Standard. Actually, unbeknownst to myself and my date, Dave, this establishment had a great vintage feel to it. It had a great dining room with Art Deco ceiling fixtures, red roses in vases, a very vintage bar, and pictures of vintage starlettes on the walls. We had a nice cozy table and sat in giant worn leather chairs under a life size picture of Claudette Colbert (?). Surrounding her picture were head shots of other women from the golden era. Aside from the very fitting atmosphere, the conversation was great.

After dinner we took a walk through the lobby of The Commonwealth Hotel because Dave thought it too had a very vintage feel to it. This is a new luxury hotel here in Boston. The lobby was great, and very vintage-y. Also, they use one of the hallways to showcase artwork. The particular photos that they had up for the month were vintage photos.

The vintage restaurant wasn't planned, but it certainly did work in his favor. The walk through the vintage lobby was thoughtful, and I thought it was rather sweet. He is not into vintage, but I found it quite nice that he took an interest in my hobby. He asked lots of questions about it, and I found his curiosity heart warming.

So all in all it was a great night. I enjoyed his company. He sent me an email today saying that he had a good time too.

I know most of you know that I have Crohn's disease and Rheumatoid arthritis. Although I've been diagnosed for 7 years, the past 3 years have been a bit rocky, so dating hasn't been a priority. It's also been a tough thing because I never know how to tell a guy that I'm dating that I have an incurable illness. Well, before we went out Dave googled my name and came across my MySpace page, where I have a blog about having CD and RA. He brought this up to me before we went on our date. I was actually really relieved because instead of having to explain it to him face to face and try to tell him what exactly this illness entails, he just read about it. Well, it turns out that he knows a lot about CD, for he has something similar to it. He has lucked out, for it hasn't interrupted his life all that much. But, unlike most guys who don't know anything about it and don't want to get involved because of it, he has a full understanding and can empathize. He was so understanding, and I don't think he saw it as a detriment. This was a huge relief to me, and helped to make meeting him a lot easier, which is something that hasn't happened for me in a while. I don't need sympathy from a man when it comes to being sick, but I do need understanding. Any guy I date has to deal with me being perfectly fine and feeling great one day, and then going into the hospital for a month the next. So, I'm really relieved that he knows. I wouldn't date a guy just because he understands my illness, but it really does help, and I find it comforting that he, in the short time I've known him, has been incredibly understanding. He's a very sweet guy and if he were to ask me out again I would say yes. I'm all about taking it slowly, so maybe by the time you all finish reading this incredibly too long post I'll have a second date to report on!!lol:D lol

Sigh.......Oh he sounds just darb Daisy, considerate, kind. The fact that he looked your name up in order to have a bit of background conversation, shows a desire to know you deep down.
I'm so glad you had a nice time, I hope there's more of them to be had for the both of you.
