I'm always interested to hear how vintage music is either sampled, stolen or just used as inspiration.

Here are a couple of examples. Does anyone have any they can share?

1. Music from the 7th Voyage of Sinbad. Bernard Herrmann Vs. The Cinematic Orchestra

I recently bought a cd with a collection of 1941-42 popular Frank Sinatra hits to go along with my 1942 Silvertone radio console. While listening to the music I thought it was awful sleepy. Some of the songs I had heard in later Sinatra albums with the Nelson Riddle orchestra and there was no comparison. I much prefer the modern versions such as Sinatras Reprise album. But then again I like Brian Setzer, the Royal Crown Revue and such.

"Never Gonna Fall in Love Again" from 1976 written and performed by Eric Carmen.

The melody of "Never Gonna Fall in Love Again" is based on the third movement from the Second Symphony by Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninoff.

In the musical "The Music Man" the composer Meredith Willson used "Severnty-Six Trombones" as the signature song. He also uses the the same tune but it is played in 3/4 metre - with a much slower tempo in a love ballad "Goodnight, My Someone".

In the composition "This Night" Billy Joel uses as "the basis of the song's chorus uses the second movement of Ludwig van Beethoven's Pathétique Sonata. Beethoven is credited as one of the song's writers on the sleeve of the album as "L.V. Beethoven". ( I never tire of Beethoven's Pathétique Sonata or Billy Jeol's This Night) :D

"A Lover's Concerto" is a pop song written by American songwriters Sandy Linzer and Denny Randell and recorded in 1965 by The Toys. Their version of the song was a major hit in both the United States and the UK during 1965. It peaked on the Billboard Hot 100 chart at #2. Linzer and Randell based the melody on the familiar "Minuet in G major" (BWV Anh. 114) from J.S. Bach's Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach. "

The Muppet one reminded me of this less than salubrious adaptation :)
