The other thing that annoys me is animal activists when I wear vintage furs. I'm fully aware this is a contraversial subject. I would never ever wear a modern fur coat or modern fur anything because I do disagree with the methods in which fur is obtained and do not want to further the trade. However when people criticise vintage fur wearing because it's bad to wear fur, all I can say is that it's not being wasted. Surely it would be worse to chuck it in the bin, meaning that the animal's life would have been a complete waste. The companies who initially sold it get no money so it's not furthering their particular trade. I am more than thoroughly supportive of animal rights and do not want the fur trade to happen, but it just annoys me when people say things for the sake of saying it. I hope I haven't rattled anyone's cages :S

My sentiments exactly. It seems so senseless to waste vintage fur. Ignore the ignorant, ill-informed people who tell you "it's bad to wear fur". They're just looking for something to rail against.

The only other thing about vintage that really bothers me is the current glut of 1980's tat in vintage shops. I hate the stuff! 1930's/40's stuff is becoming increasingly hard to find and I may as well just forget about trying to find affordable 1920's stuff lol.

I think the main issue with wearing vintage fur is not that wearing fur is bad per se but that wearing fur encourages others to do the same, and they may find it easier to buy new. That just encourages the new fur market to continue.

There's nothing wrong with mixing vintage with coloured hair. To me dying my hair pink is no different to deciding to dye it blonde. It's just a hair colour. [huh]

Just glad there are so many nice people on here that are nice about my haircolour

The girls in question are often not completely retro themselves and I used to get the same thing when I was brunette. Mind you if I were blonde I would be seriously tempted by that lilac shade!

I don't mind when they don't notice or a cursory nod, but sometimes a scowl..really!

I'm sorry. My comment was a little unclear. I didn't mean to say at all that all people who are against fur are ill-informed or ignorant. It's just that I'm constantly beseiged by people who condemn me for wearing fur but can't give me a reason other than "it's bad". It's these people I have a problem with. When people can justify their dislike of it with well-reasoned opinions, I have no qualms.

I think it's not only vintage lady to vintage lady, but vintage lady to modern lady...
I don't dress in vintage every day. As time goes on and I make more of my clothing rather than buy it it looks more vintage, but I specifically remember several occasions when I saw someone wearing vintage and smiled or complimented them or tried to talk to them and was totally given the cold shoulder. I can only assume it was because I wasn't dressed in vintage that they assumed I had no idea what I was talking about or wasn't worth their time.
So yeah... I think as a general rule it's nice to be civil to anyone, no matter what they're wearing, cause you never know what you'll have in common.

Very wise. And y'know, how much effort does it take to be civil? But even if the other person rejects your courtesy, admiring and complimenting them is still a nice thing to do. Probably good for your karma.

Vintage lady grumpiness

Well the vintage grumpiness continues, over here in Albion a certain vintage festival has caused comment, and some of the responses to these have been nasty and personal. I felt compelled to write again, on whether I was a vintage snob. I'm not even uber vintage, just a bit soppy and fond of the past. But I'm blogging again here: redlegs on snobbiness
I hope I don't give the impression of being unfriendly and miserable, I'm not !

And I totally agree. If it is a vintage-style event, people ought to make a stab at the style.

At our big events, there is a dress code. We even have a costume closet at the Gatsby Summer Afternoon to dress the clueless who bought a ticket but somehow neglected to dress. Otherwise, it ruins it for everyone.

A small note on the subject of fur -

I think culture and national background has something to do with personal views on the appropriateness of fur as well.

As an example, in Australia, you are legally required to destroy rabbits if they are living on your property (using methods condoned by the government as humane). This is because they are a classified pest species (an introduced species that is SO damaging to the environment and to many native species that it needs to be controlled/destroyed).
I think, they are destroyed anyway, so we should be thrifty by making the best use of them as we can, and if that means using the fur, so be it.

Ditto for kangaroos that are killed for the domestic meat market - why not use as much of the animal as possible, rather than being wasteful?

But I fully accept that different people will have different views

Oh, and Dame Edna - if you look at photos of her when she first hit the stage in the late 1950s/early 1960s, it's a huge difference to now. The hair has become a lot more purple, the clothes a lot more sparkly!

I get alot of negative comments in my shop if i wear or sell any vintage fur items which makes my blood boil, although i do try and contain myself and politely explain to these often quite rude people that it is out of respect for the animal that died many years ago that i choose to wear it or sell it to someone who will cherish it, rather than bin it. I also point out perhaps they had better research what their manmade fibres are doing to the planet, carbon footprint wise, let alone the child labour issues and general ill treatment of workers producing man made high street clothing, before they have a pop at me and the fact i am actually being environmentally kinder than them by recycling. All said nicely and politely mind you. I'll get off my soapbox now! I am a grumpy vintage lady today sorry x
