In my hunt for another vintage style dress brand I came across a few websites that offer Nataya dresses at good prices.
The first link also offers quite a few vintage inspired glamour gowns.
I'm not sure if these links have already been put up, sorry in advance if they have.
I've been looking to buy a few vintage inspired dresses for Queen Mary. I have a few very pretty vintage gowns that I love, but due to recent weight gain, I've had to find some "back up" dresses just in case I can't fit into my gowns by the event. I've looked at vintage ones, but I'm finding that not only will it be a little less money to buy a vintage inspired dress but they also have better return policies. This way I can buy a few gowns and outfits, keep the receipts and tags, and return them at the slim (no pun intended) chance that my vintage dresses will fit again. I really would prefer to wear a vintage dress, and I am learning to sew, so I guess I could make one from a vintage pattern. But, I'm a bit stressed out and would feel better if I had a few "fall back" items, just in case all my plans for other outfits don't come through.
These two websites offer some very pretty dresses, if anyone is interested. Maybe, if some of you do on the off chance buy something from one of these places for the Queen Mary, you should let us know in advance what you pick. Wouldn't all want to wear the same thing! That would be funny. I do know that you all, like me, would prefer the real thing and probably like me would like the element of surprise at the event. These websites do offer some of the better alternatives I've seen lately. Also, with the price of vintage being what it is lately (example: a gown I really loved that I watched for a week was only 30 dollars an hour before the auction ended. By the last minute the gown went from $30 to $275!! with 6 people bidding on it all at the last minute), I might not even be able to afford to buy all the outfits I need to. Hmmm, I guess I should motivate myself to lose the 5 pounds I gained. It'd be much cheaper to wear the dresses that I already have, and I do really love them. OK, I've gone on and on. The excitement for the Queen Mary event has taken over. Anyone else a bit stressed out about their wardrobe??

I love Coldwater Creek www.coldwatercreek.com. Not all vintage, per se, but some pieces are vintage inspired, especially their dresses. And they have fantastic sales in their online Outlet ! They also have stores across the country.

I used to work in a bridal shop, and I thought she had some great pieces--many were very 30s inspired.

Again, all new stuff, but Jessie Steele for adorable aprons, Louise Green for hats (has all kinds of styles, tho' pricey); and Anthropologie always has something cool--shoes too. For real vintage ($$drool only$$) has anybody mentioned The Frock? Zappos, i know has come up quite a few times.

For those that like hair doodads, companies making clips for kids have some breathtaking ones that totally work for us too! NoSlippyHairClippy, Pea Soup, Rachel Weissman....

(I have a children's store, thus the experience with hair accessories, and the aprons...JS does mother/daughter aprons:the cutest!)

Occassionally, and I do mean occassionally Forever XXI will have vintage styled dresses, the fabric is questionable, but when it comes to inexpensive... under $40 and sometimes under $30.

I finally got my dress in the mail yesterday. It is very pretty, but thought there were some important things of note to let you know. This is juniors sizing, so I'd suggest going up a size. I did, and am glad. The dress is shorter than I realized. Even though I went up a size, it still falls just above the knee. I am only 5'1, so if you are any taller than this, it might be too short. It is also low cut. Although Hemingway Jones and a male neighor friend really did like this, I was surprised by how much it showed. Just wanted to give a bit of a warning before any one else bought this dress. Although it is vintage inspired, in person, it looks pretty modern. Also, it is very see through. In the sunlight you can see right through the dress. Has to be worn with a slip, unless you don't mind letting the world see your unmentionables.

That seems to be standard on Forever 21 dresses. The other day at the mall I tried on 4 or 5 of their dresses and pretty much all of them were see-through! Very disappointing, although I guess it's one of those you-get-what-you-pay-for sort of situations - but still!

I am starting to think that has less to do with the fabric, and more to do with the fairly poor quality. Hubby accidentally threw one of my new "Handwash Only" Forever 21 shirtwaist dresses in the washing machine. :eusa_doh: I caught it before he put it in the dryer too!

Well, one button had already come off and all of the buttonhole threads were completely frayed--just from that one wash! (The fabric itself seemed fine...)
Anyway, as I said before I know it isn't the greatest of quality, which is still okay with me as I plan to use the couple of dresses I got as dailywear around my toddler. But just wanted to mention that if you take the time to handwash, your dress might last a bit longer...

I wouldn't put it past them. Anything to cut costs and sell higher.

Jess, thanks for the advice. I guess I'll stick with hand washing in Woolite. It's a cute dress, but I get the feeling I won't be getting too much use out of it. I wouldn't expect anything more from a $22 dollar dress.

For the most part, most of my vintage clothes are vintage inspired, or modern conservative (youd be surprised how well that can be pulled off). If you are looking for some cute vintage finds, there is a cute costume shoppe on Hyde and California here in the citay. I got some super cute things there and the owner is nice. They also have a lot of vintage repo, like 20s hats and such.

But for the most part, I make my items. Most vintage today isnt in my size so I use a vintage pattern and go nuts A lot of ladies here sew as well. And thrift stores are always great. Im sure youve been to THrift Town on Market st, and the THrift store/ costume shop there as well, right?!

As far as accessories go, I forgo eBay (we have a history) and go to rubylane.com. IIve gotten some nice things there.

SF is a great place to find stuff. Living here give you a pretty good advantage, but you gotta hurry before it get picked through.

Im pretty good at sizing up patterns. I only have to do it an few inches or so its not a big deal. If you want practice at sizing up a pattern, I suggest getting a modern pattern, as they tend to place three sizes in one package/on one pattern. It gives great guides as to what areas are size adjustable.

yeah, the clothes are inexpensive for a reason, they skimp on the construction. Junior sizing, means everything is smaller, not just the chest are like vintage! I bought that dress too, I was really surprised that it fit in the chest, hopefully enough to be able to wear a slip under! Or I will just wear it with blue jeans a la Trinny and Suzanna.

Betsy Johnson also will occassionally have vintage style dress, a little more expensive, but definately better quality. So you do pay for what you get...

You'd be surprised. I think a lot of the fall BCBG line is, and i do emphasize, vintage-inspired. However, I'm just about 5'3" as well, and most things are above the knee....

Now why then do they make all the jeans with a 34'' inseam?!

I heart BCBG!! Their pants are rather long- I know they fit me in length and I have a hard time finding pants long enough. I know they have a sample sale once a year at their corporate office in Vernon, CA in November- they usually don't post dates so as it gets close maybe give them a ring- I believe it's under AZ3 in Vernon, CA if you want to goole the number I've picked up $300 dresses for 40 bucks there- but you have to know your in their line, which I'm told runs small- before you go because there is absolutely no trying on.
