I actually LOVE the navigation tools on Etsy (I mean how many sites let you search by COLOR!) - but I can admit it can be a bit tricky. The thing that I like best is that the navigation works mostly through networking... so if you find something that you'll like, it'll likely lead you to something ELSE that you like, and so on and so on. You really do need to play with it for a while, though, and try using a bunch of different navigation methods... like I said, once you find something, it can lead you to something else... check other items from the same seller, see who else likes that seller, see what those people like...
Most importantly, you need to keep an open mind. This is NOT ebay or a point-and-click online store. You can't go in saying "I am going to buy a repro 40's dress" and expect to find it. You may very well find it, and it may be a fabulous little gem, but the items on Etsy are so many and so varied that you're more likely to fall in love with something you didn't know you were looking for than to find something specific. For me, it's just great fun to browse through the amazingly creative things that people are making with their bare hands - buying awesome stuff is secondary.
