I actually LOVE the navigation tools on Etsy (I mean how many sites let you search by COLOR!) - but I can admit it can be a bit tricky. The thing that I like best is that the navigation works mostly through networking... so if you find something that you'll like, it'll likely lead you to something ELSE that you like, and so on and so on. You really do need to play with it for a while, though, and try using a bunch of different navigation methods... like I said, once you find something, it can lead you to something else... check other items from the same seller, see who else likes that seller, see what those people like...

Most importantly, you need to keep an open mind. This is NOT ebay or a point-and-click online store. You can't go in saying "I am going to buy a repro 40's dress" and expect to find it. You may very well find it, and it may be a fabulous little gem, but the items on Etsy are so many and so varied that you're more likely to fall in love with something you didn't know you were looking for than to find something specific. For me, it's just great fun to browse through the amazingly creative things that people are making with their bare hands - buying awesome stuff is secondary.

I found a few cute dresses and pencil skirts at Windsor. They seem to cater to the juniors crowd, so I'd suggest going up a size if not two. I'm assuming their clothes run like that of Delia's or Forever 21. But, a couple of their dresses were just so cute, and they have a 30 day return policy, so I'm giving them a try. I got the third dress. I really wanted the second one, but they didn't have my size. I will check back next week to see if they got any more in. The dresses are under the "day dress" category in the dress section, and the skirts are in the "bottoms" category. Also, these dresses look short. I'm only 5 ft. tall, so they should be below the knee on me. These might be better for a more petite gal. Finally having stumps for legs has an advantage!!!:D

It is a shame that they are so short. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they'll be OK on my short body. But my bigger back side tends to make hem's rise, so they might just be too short for me too:( I'm hoping though:)

I´m 5´6 so they would be way too short for me and I have scars on my knees that I don´t want to show around in daily life.

The chinese eBay tailor has tons of variations on that exact dress, and she makes it to your exact size!

I don't think it at all expensive for an entirely custom made dress, but more expensive than something off-the peg certainly. I have such trouble with dresses, for something like that it is worth every penny!

I'm currently waiting for this one to be delivered! I will post a report on quality once it arrives. I think with shipping it was $95 or so, which was a bit pricey, but not so much for a custom piece.

The seller has been very attentive and will do custom work. If the work is quality I may ask her to make up a couple other things as well.

That's a great price for a custom dress. Let us know how fit and quality are. I was contemplating getting a suit from the same seller. My figure makes getting any modern suiting kind of difficult, there's always some part that needs to be altered, and the skirts all seem to be huge in the waist and too tight in the tooshy and hips:(
I hope the dress is great and fits perfectly:)

Daisy-- I will be sure to give a full report! Did you see the VW suit and the Marilyn Monroe ones? I am very tempted to get some suits done if the work is solid.

I actually sent her a pic of an evening gown which she was willing to do from the picture for $140 including shipping-- I didn't give her the go-ahead tho b/c I didn't have enough time to get the gown made before my upcoming event.

I have some very sweet 40s patterns for suits I would love to send out to be done. I really could use some summer weight suits.

you are quite right lol

it's just that I am thinking that I am able to do this by myself, so it's going to be a little less expensive thant that

But I have been looking at the dresses of this seller for a year now, and I must admit I have been tempted more than once lol

Hey, I have that exact same dress! But I bought mine at Frederick's of Hollywood.

I haven't worn it yet because my bra straps show.

I think when I become brave enough I'll just go strapless because it's definitely not a braless dress!

Has anyone seen this one at their Target store? It's polka dots but not showing up well in this pic.

I got this dress this past weekend. It's really cute in person, and surprisingly well made. I'm not sure if you can tell from the picture, but it's also trimmed in brown, and the belt is actually a contrasting belt. It's the dark brown with cream colored polka dots. It's also really soft cotton. I'm quite happy with it.

Yes, I did see those suits! So darn cute. I can't believe her prices, $140 for a custom made gown is incredible. I never thought of sending her a pattern and having her make it for me. But, I might just do that, her prices are so reasonable.

The quality of the work is very good from the ebay girl, I can vouch for it myself! She actually sent me another skirt free of charge when it turned out that the measurements I had sent were wrong. So I have two skirts now and plan on selling one. She wouldn't let me sent it back!

Let me explain. I sent her the measurements of my very well fitting Stop Staring skirt instead of measuring my body. Well they obviously measure exact whereas I now suspect that the clothes of SS are cut for a certain body size, minus a few inches all round to allow for clinging to curves. The skirt that arrived from Vietnam was very big and looked decidedly frumpy. I was unhappy with the length of the split as if I'd have taken it in all the way round I'd have not been able to walk as it was very short. So I sent her new measurements, told her I wanted it tight and gave her a split length and my new skirt arrived very soon after!

I also got a load of small fabric samples. Now of all of these, the black is the least nice, I think. It is more synthetic-y looking than any of the other colours. They have a more cottony look and feel, but with stretch. They will be just perfect for the Stop Staring dress lookalikes she does, way nicer than the SS material itself! I also think they'd make very nice Marilyn suits! Daisy if you'd like me to send you one of the sample sheets so you can see the material I will as I have two lots (one came with each skirt).

I am planning on ordering a couple of dresses in June. The grey rockabilly dress copy, one in mint green with shoter cap sleeves and the swingy skirt, and one in baby blue with a more fitted skirt but also with capsleeves. I think they will become favourites very quickly (and if you order 2 things, and maybe get something for a friend, it makes the shipping much more bearable!)

That brown polka-dot dress from Target was posted a few pages back, I believe. I tried it on and it looked like a table cloth on me. No matter how cute it looks on the hanger or on a model, I will not be adding this one to my collection!
