As for changing brow colors, I personally can't stand black brows with red hair, (on myself) so I dye my brows when I dye my hair.

Red, do you have to use a special color for the brows, or can I just use the same color for the brows as I do for my hair? I've gone red recently and it kinda bugs me my brows are still pitch black. But I've never colored my brows before so I have no idea how to proceed and which color, if it should be the same as my hair or a different shade...

I used this color for my hair, though mine turned out much darker than on the package since I have very dark brown hair naturally:

BOSTON! LETS GO PATRIOTS!!!
Not sure if this has been discussed yet, forgive me if it has, this thread just has a ton of information in it and even though I looked through, it's possible I have missed something. Anyway, my hairstylist/good friend Shelley is a natural blonde, hence her eyebrows are quite light and look sparse. Being a pinup model she never liked the way they came out in photos and always spent too much time filling them in, and trying to find that perfect color that didn't look ridiculous.
Now she gets her eyebrows tattooed on, and they look amazing!! It's a semi=permanent tattoo, so she goes in once a year to have it done. She says it's painless, they use a numbing cream first (disclosure to pain reference- she has a few tattoo's so pain judgement is relative) and it's really quick. It's an investment, and can be pricey, but with all the money some of us are spending on products to get the perfect brow, it might be worth it for some.
My brows are very fine, even though I have dark hair. I've gotten pretty quick with filling them in, and the shape is better than it was a year ago. I've learned that my eyebrows are the shape they are because they are what suits my face. I'm just not spending any more time stressing over getting that perfect arch, it's just not gonna happen. I'm not shaving off my brows and drawing them on either, that's just not for me. I tried for years to change the shape, get a high arch. Then I started penciling in the arch, which I thought looked good, but upon looking at pictures later on, did not!!lol So, I've come to terms with my brows, they have a tiny arch to them, but now that I'm getting my photo taken more I do like them and finally realized that following the natural line of my brow suits my face so much better.

But, filling them in, although not too difficult can be tedious. I mean, we gotta do all these little layering steps to try and make them as natural as possible. I mix together two different colors and have found the perfect shade that matches my brows to a T. It's a Maybeline pencil, with a finishing cream on one end in the perfect shade of brown. But I think as soon as all the health issues are healed up I'm gonna go and get the tattoo's done. My neighbor owns a tattoo shoppe and I have seen her work and am so impressed by it. Hopefully at the end up April I'll be able to get them done. Going to Italy in May and have some cool photo shoots planned, so it'd be great to finally have permanent brows. Warning though if you do decide to do this, the first week your brows will be very dark!!

I'd love to see it! All the cosmetic tattooing I've seen has looked atrocious. Demi-permanent seems like a no brainier, and perfect!

Laura, when I color my brows, I use the same color I use on my hair. I don't know if you have a Sally's, but any beauty supply should have some disposable mascara wands. I put a little color on the wand and comb it into my brow. It can be a little messy, so I take a Q-tip and wipe away around the edges.

Another tip...So you don't end up looking "painted".. before you go to rinse your hair...get a little shampoo on your fingers and massage into your brows and then wipe off with a wet washcloth. Make sure you use straight shampoo first! Shampoo before water!! And you can do the same around your hairline and you won't get that...stain. ;)

That's my favoured shade of red too! And I have black eyebrows...

See, and I think the black brows look so good on you! I couldn't stand them on myself. I don't know if it was because I had shaved and drawn on colored eyebrows and was used to that or the fact that they looked like little hairy caterpillars crawling on my forehead. lol

dollydaydream, my hair is very dark and I didn't bleach it first, but the Live XXL still gave me a very nice red. But if your hair is colored black it might be difficult, I dunno... It seems like a good color for dark hair.

~*Red*~, great advice, I shall try that next time I color, which will be soon, I want it even more red. And I always get those red stains on my scalp, I think it looks like a rash. :eusa_doh: I thought there was nothing to do about it, it usually goes away after a few washes. So I should shampoo that too before washing?

MissHannah, the black brows look good on you, maybe it's just my skin color that clashes with the red and black combined. It doesn't look bad but I'm just curious if it'd look better with red brows. I've never tried it before. :)

What colour are your brows naturally Laura? Mine are almost black naturally and I'm very pale skinned. I think that the bright red looks so obviously artificial anyway that maybe the black brows just add to the doll-like effect. It depends on how 'natural' you like your look to be I guess.

Oh they are pretty good yus, though when I've used them in the past they tend to fade pretty quickly, especially the reds. I have to lighten my hair othetherwise it makes no difference at all because of the black dye. I wouldn't care, last time I had my hair cut I promised I wouldn't dye it black again. Oops...

I should probably have said :eek:fftopic: too. Sorry

I finally grew my (formerly pencil-thin) brows into a thicker, more 50's shape. The grow-out process was torture (!!!), but well worth it. I went about two weeks without plucking initially, and then scheduled an appointment with a brow specialist in town. She waxed them, then had me grow them in for three more weeks. I got them waxed again about a week ago, and then I'm going to see her one more time before I start plucking again to maintain the shape. I'd stick to waxing if her appointments weren't so expensive! I really don't trust anyone else in town, though.

I think skin color has something to do with it. I'm not at all pale, and I get pretty tan. I can't do a doll look by any means. But when I go red, the brows must go red too. Mind you, they are not cartoonish red. I dye them red and use my auburn brow colors from Smashbox to perfect them. When the black brow hair start to grow in and my brows darken, I use the dark brown color I use now. It ends up looking more natural. But it is far easier for me to do it this way than to go just black and bright red hair. I'll have to find a pic. Mind you I have 0 pics of me with black brows and red hair.

Hey PS! If you want to see her photos you can go to my myspace page and check out *ShellsBells* on my top friends. Sorry to link you to my page instead of directly to hers, but for some reason myspace is acting funny and not letting me open any pages, so I can't get to the direct link to her page to copy it.
Her name is Shelley, she's my good friend/hair stylist, and she's the sweetest girl. As well as an adorable pinup model with a great style. If you want more info on the tattoo's just let me know, anything I can't answer I can always find out from her. You'll see from her pics she knows quite a bit about ink. Oh, she also has a wonderful blog about wedding/vintage up do's if you feel like checking that out while you're at her page. She's really talented, has been doing hair for 15 years, and is incredible with vintage styling. She does a lot of modeling for Hemingway Jones, so when she comes over for shoots she always sets my hair and does different styles for me. I wish she had time to come and visit here, she has so much info on vintage hair/makeup, but she loves hair so much she actually chooses to work 6 days a week!!
Let me know what you think of her brows:)

As a redhead, I usually keep my brows pretty dark, but not black. But my red isn't as nice and bright as Hannah's, or I'd do them black as well!

In this pic, I had just lightened my hair to look more like Rose. I felt so washed out tho, and darkened my eyebrows like I normally do. Well, that just looked rediculous to be "Rose", so I penciled over top with auburn. I'm not found of this look on me, but for this it had to be done.

I had just come in from outside and didn't realize my bangs were messed up from the wind here!

Here's an incredibly goofy pic as I was trying to do the Viv/Scarlett brow thing... I wouldn't normally show this except we're talking brows and colors, so, here ya go.

Ohairas you are SUCH a fox in that last pic!! Love the cocked eyebrow - so cool!

You really think so? I think I look so corny! But thanks Hannah! I guess I just expect to look *just like Viv* when I do it and well, I DON'T. Ha!

Here's a pic with my red brows. This was last summer, just before I went back to to brown.

100_3901-1.jpg

This is from when I used to shave them and then pencil them in. My pencil of choice were those Maybelline red pencils, the Dark brown color and the Auburn I used both.

Here are my brows today

I'm now using the dark brown Benefit Brow Zing (old single wax color version) to fill in.

Not goofy at all!!! You did a great Vivien Look! The only thing she does different, is both eyes are kind of.. squinting.. not squinting.. but you know.. half closed.. or whatever.. you know what I mean. lol Give 'em the eye! Can you do both eyebrows separately, or just the one? I can only do my left one. Hee!
