Vintage Cruising

Well, I went to Hot August Nights in Reno last night. There was a four hour cruise down Virginia St. where all the classics and hot rods cruised up and down. Since all the "modern-day puritans and anti-fun police" have practically banned cruising outright. Do any of you remember cruising in high school?: bunch of friends in the back of a pick-up or Dad's station wagon, drinking soda's eating hamburgers, shooting pool? etc. Where were the big cruises in your hometown?

I did the cruising thing. Reservoir Avenue, in my hometown of Cranston, Rhode Island was the hot spot. Although it was more like "The Fast and The Furious" than the wonderful days gone by one cars were simply magnificent.

A few years ago, a shopping area in my hometown started "Sunday Cruisin". Lot's of families with classic cars get together to cruise the boulavard in the plaza, then park in one of the big lots and all raise their hoods and eat ice cream from trucks.

I did do the more classic style cruising when I was a kid, for my dad and Grandfather were collectors of vintage cars. My Grandfather made his living restoring vintage cars here in Massachusetts. People commisioned him from as far away as Florida to re-build their classics. He was very talented, and because of it I got to go to a lot of classic car events when I was a kid. I remember being a bit embarrased when my dad would pick me up at school in one of them. Now I'd be so happy to have a drive in one.
Like this thread, brings back very nice memories.

I hung out for several years during my misspent youth, cruising with this old beast.
I still have the Mustang, though I don't do the hot-rod scene much anymore, I'm more into restoration these days.

Let's see. hmmm back in high school the big cruising scene used to take place on Castro Valley Blvd. in Castro Valley, CA. Kids from San Leandro, San Lorenzo, Hayward and Castro Valley would get out there and cruise up and down the boulevard, until the anti-fun police made U-Turns illegal from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. Since this was 1986 a lot of the kids had lowered mini pick-ups with hydraulic lifts on the the beds.lol One of my friends would cruise in his '73 Dodge Dart  or '69 Chevy Townsman station wagon. I had my Dad's '73 Chevy half ton.:D

That was still being done into the early 90s there. The no U turn thing didn't make any difference until they really pulled out the stops. All you did was go into one of the parking lots and turn around. It really depended on how flashy or memorable your car was. I never had any problems.
I noticed it was gone later on. I check it out on a slow weekend and it was empty. [huh]

J

Today us old car people have cruise-ins where we congragate for the opportunity of letting anyone walk by and look at the variety of automobilia.

All we did in St. Louis was "cruise" the Steak & Shake restaurants which had curb service back in the 60s. One guy made some sort of record in the number of times he drove around the parking lot. In reality one or 2 times around was enough and we parked. There was no section of town that was cruised specially.

Every second and third Thursday of the month from May-September in San Leandro there is a cruise night with dozens of hot rods and classics in the parking lot of KMart. There are some really sweet cars there.:D

Well, when he's using it for sturgeon fishing he can take his stinky feet and drop those into the bay. That would make the most hardened Islamists surrender.
