Vintage Car Thread - Discussion and Parts Requests

On the note of the radiator, we had a leak in our '31 Model A and that Prestone Stop Leak and Super Tech Coolant fixed it. One didn't work without the other, though.

For the Transmission, I recommend trying some Lucas, I can't remember the exact name, but it's some sort of tranny stuff they have. It seemed to work well. Also, those transmissions are fairly common in boneyards. I haven't bought a trans in a couple years, but my last one was 200 bucks and I put it in myself. Good way to save some cash. If your dad's a bit more schooled in cars, I'm sure he could help you or walk you through it.

Hmmm... It worked fine for me by itself but i've never had a 31. :p

I doubt many people have fixed as many cars as you have in such a short time. You are what we call an expert here. :p

The radiator wasn't a 31, though. It was a modern job to keep up with the 350.

Expert? Hardly. I'm just a shadetree mechanic who knows enough to be dangerous. More often than not, my dad or brother, who are far better mechanics than me have to bail me out.

Ah, that might be the problem. My old copper core radiators might have been better for it to stick to.

Yeah well the rest of us out here don't even attempt to do anything like that because we know better. In fact, right now my 57 is in the shop to get the gas tank sending unit replaced. I might have sourced a new part but I am not going to replace it myself---especially pulling a gas tank to do it. You know how much a full tank weighs?! :p

Dropping a gas tank is easy. Especially in MoPars. My brother's fell off in his '86 Ram and mine was sitting on the driveshaft of my '89 Ram when I bought it. Had to replace the one in the '73 Satellite as well. A couple hoses and straps and it's outta there.

I appreciate the suggestions, and will take them all into account once i am ready to approach these two problems. This site has proven extremely useful to me, both in terms of hat and such knowledge, and now mechanics as well...

Well, whatever happens, I hope you can keep that beautiful Town Car on the road. Best of luck!

I don't think that would be cost-effective lol

Come on out and fix it for me then. :p

When we get Our Own Vintage Town going, Tom's Garage will have no shortage of business.

Can't wait!

When may I bring the Ford around? The battery needs new separators and the main and connecting rod bearings need to be taken up. The brake band is pretty well worn, in fact I've been using the reverse pedal to brake for some time. The triple gear bushings in the transmission seem to be a bit loose, too. Car needs a thorough going over and I can't get to the work, as I spend most of my time these days caring for the 'rents and attending to my sadly diminished business.

Does our Vintage Town automotive chronology extend to '60's-era muscle cars? I grew up working on Pontiac GTO's, Chevy 396's, Olds 442's and such and those made working on cars worthwhile - lots(!) of bang for the buck. If so, I want a part-time job at the garage (high-performance annex).
(Being a Southern boy, my mechanic's outfit was,and would be, a pair of blue jeans, a (very) dirty white T-shirt, and a baseball cap. No red rag, though...)
