Vintage Bogie Cavanagh Ebay Find

Daryl (aka Kentucky Blues) got this vintage Cavanagh on ebay a few weeks ago. Long story short, it came in to me, and when I saw how nice the hat was, I decided to send it to Optimo to have Graham clean and reblock it for him, and have Marlene put a new ribbon on it. The hat was in perfect condition, with no holes, tears, or stains, yet it looked like someone had sat on it.
I think it looks very Bogie now. Opinions?

Daryl, it'll be at your doorstep tomorrow. Thanks for allowing me to take care of this fine specimen for you.

Booteefull!!! I want a Cavanagh real bad. I don't own one. I got some questions about vintage brim, but will make a different post since it will go outside the realm of just Cavanaghs. Fedora

That is where I bought my coat about 4 years ago. I can't remember the brand at the moment though it is a nice grey trench. Now you need to do what Bogie did in Tokyo Joe and just knead the hat in your hands to give it the roughed up look.

I really need a computer at home, I have alot of pics I want to post and doing all this stuff at work is really urking me.

Yeah, I'll probably end up kneading my hat in my hands, I always do that regardless :p And I'm definately going with the grey/taupe color trench ;). And yes, it seems you would need a home computer :p

I have to comment

Gentlemen: ZOHAR you are quite the professional, and I am extremely grateful even as an outside observer for the wonderful act you performed for Kentuckey Blues. You are a saint.

I am extremely envious of this hat, and I will steadfast and without a doubt state that this hat is mint, vintage, perfect. I have a brown in this condition, shape, form. I whish this hat was mine. Optimo did a great job, and this example is what all of us should rember: buying a clean felt on Ebay and having it cleaned, blocked, and the trim items changed will bring back to life wonderful vintage felt. You can't get the same quality today..so if the felt has not been damaged, you can have it transformed into a beautiful masterpiece that is not avilable from anyone today.

Zohar, my hat is OFF to you!!:fedora:

I got the hat! And it looks pretty darn good. However, the cavanagh edge, seems to be a little crooked....which seems to be a common trait on some of my hats...like the fed (though it's not really a cavanagh edge).

Here's a pic with the brim turned up in the front, don't know how visible it is in the pic, but you can see how it's a little lopsided

Here's the front with the brim down, if you look in the back you can also see the lopsidedness

With this pic of the back, you can really see it. That's about as close as I could get to the exact center of the back.

Anybody got any tips on what I could do to fix this? I really want this hat to look its best.

HOW? The hat looks perfect. and it is clean, and mint. You shape the brim by gentel steam, and hand shapeing.

Do you mean the brim curl? The welted edge is not changable.

You are a lucky guy there on that hat my friend!

I agree. That is a beautiful specimen. I saw it on eBay, and I didn't bid on it only because I knew you were having trouble finding one in your size on eBay. Glad it turned out so well!

You know, a lot of my vintage hats have little...we'll call them "character traits," like the brim deal you're talking about. I personally love 'em. I have a great resistol fedora I got which had a sort of crooked bash to it, and definitely a lopsided brim, similar to what you've got there. I straightened out the bash (as much as it would let me - it really seemed to want to stay crooked!), but I really love the weird brim. It's perfect for wearing your hat a little tilted on your head, and I actually think that's why it's that way. When I try to wear my Akubra a little tilted, it's not quite right. The right side of your hat (your left) is a little higher than the other, and I think it'll help it look more tilted than it is. I looked heavily into this and decided that a lot of the tilted fedoras I've seen in films had uneven brims, to make them look even more tilted than they were. The Resistol I got seemed to prove this. Bogie wore his hats very tilted - this one seems made for it!
