Vintage Lover, were you able to get the original Mafia to work in Windows Vista? I tried sometime over a year ago, couldn't get it to work, and after looking online only found posts on computer forums that further told me it doesn't work in Vista. Is there a special trick you found?
I'm really not sure. I believed I downloaded the latest patches, set it to compatibility mode, and I think that was it. In strict confidence, it was a copy a "friend" gave to me after finding it on a torrent, so that might possibly of made the difference. I did get it to run, but could never get the background music to play.

I guess I will have to give it another try sometime. It's a bummer the background music doesn't work for you. That's a major part of that game. I remember using some sort of downloadable patch several years ago (back when I had Mafia working on an older computer) to extract the music files from the game and turn them into music files (mp3's or windows media files I think). I have them on my iPod somewhere.

Yeah, that game introduced me to Django Reinhardt's music.

I got Mafia 2 yesterday and played it until about 3 this morning. I liked it, and it has a good story line so far, but I think the game itself feels incomplete somehow. I remember things like engine swaps promised to be available in cars, custom suits to be available, the ability to buy cars and not have to steal them, the ability to read newspapers, the ability to make choices that affect the storyline, the list goes on and on. The other thing that bothers me is the fact that you have to use Steam, which requires an internet connection, to play the game.
Does anyone else share this sentiment?

Sounds like another victim of Conceptual Overreach--seen it before in the Microsoft space-sim Freelancer. Which isn't a bad game in itself, but when you compare it to how Digital Anvil and Chris Roberts originally conceived the project, the full Release Version seems like a multiplayer demo...

I would have say you put the words in perfect order. I DO, however, have to say that the soundtrack is the best in a game I have ever seen. Who knows, they might release extra features in download packs.

I dunno, the symphony orchestra and chorals in StarCraft II are pretty darn good... and so was Freelancer's score.

Command & Conquer: Zero Hour got a similar "half the content left on the cutting room floor", and then somebody figured out how to put the pieces back together and stuff it all back in with a "Director's Cut" mod.

Hello,

With Steam-powered games you need an internet connection to activate the game, but you can play with them disconnected from the 'net. :)

I didn't see mention of it in here, but has anyone played the Sam & Max games?

I've been playing those on computer since Sam & Max Hit the Road. I loved their recent rebirth in Season 1, and I've just recently started Season 2.

For anyone unfamiliar with the series, Sam is a noir-style private detective and max is a "psychotic" rabbit; together, they are "freelance police". There is a great deal of subtle adult, yet appropriate, humor, as well as witty quips and dialouge.

The original Sam & Max Hit the Road was produced by Lucasarts and was far ahead of its time in terms of style and humor. Basically, the object of the games is to solve a mystery via various "puzzles", conversations and comedic interactions. The locations throughout the game are quite American, but usually pretty clever and humorous (e.g. a real place in Oregon where physics don't appear to apply, can't remember what it's called).

In any case, it's done in a very detective noir style, it's very funny and clever, and they tend to be quite fun.

Found that out today lol. It still irks me that they cut allot of content from the game. That and the fact that I couldn't pre-order the collectors edition :rage:
And I have never played the Sam and Max games, I might check them out.

This is a unique series. I actually never played Sam & Max Hit the Road, although I've played quite a few LucasArts titles from that same time period. I have played Season 1 of Sam & Max, and enjoyed it.

LA Noire has been bumped (*again*) from October this year to February next year, I read it over at kotaku.com.

I've just stopped waiting for this game to come out, I honestly do not care anymore, I mean I am not that much of a gamer to begin with.

Bringing this thread back to life :)
Have anybody played any good games based in the golden era lately?

I have just got LA Noire, it seems pretty good and interesting.
Thinking of getting some more games based on this same era, maybe Mafia 2 would be a good choice?

MAfia II is a great game. I beat it guite a few times, then ended up driving around and causing mayhem wherever I went. After awhile, my Xbox ate the disk, so you fall through the map, but it is still a fun one to play. Ended up giving the Xbox to my gal though, so she can have fun with it! I recommend it!

L.A. Noir is one of the best games that I have played. I have had it since it was first released and still love replaying the cases. The map for L.A. is highly accurate (somewhere around 95%). The scenery, crime scenes, and characters are all amazingly high detail. Definitely worth checking out especially now that the price has dropped.

I found Mafia II boring after a while. My comments about that game are basically as follows:

- What it does well, it does really well.
- What it doesn't do well, it completely fails at doing.

That's just about it.

Over 10 years later, I'm STILL playing the ORIGINAL Mafia game that came out in 2002. And I still love it just as much.
