Veterinary Medicine

Mrs. Crumrine and I have always had family values we belive found most commonly prior to WWII, and now we have medicine to match. One of us got a minor dermatological infection for which our HMO doctor recommended an over-the-counter solution. The problem persisted, and ten days later a follow-up phone call elicited the statment "Well, continue (with the OTC medication) another ten days and then call me if it doesn't clear up and I'll perscribe something stronger". This, friends, is pre-WWII medicine: A solution can be provided, but you haven't suffered enough. Naturally, we did what any late 1930's provincial would do and repaired to the local equistrian stables where we purchased a topical horse medicine suitable for the purpose. Positive results were noticed almost immediately. This was not our first veterinary medicine purchase, as we've been using Therma-Flex (in gel form) for years. And the originally veterinary products Mane & Tail (a shampoo) and Udder Butter (an industrial strength hand creme) are well known to have reached commercially successful sales when marketed at increased prices to humans.

So here's the question: Have you ever used medicines provided for animals, and were you satisfied with the results?

Mail and Tail smells wonderful. When I use it, it reminds me of bathing my Thoroughbred, Velvet. I miss her :( I should post a picture of her even though I don't have her anymore.

Corona ointment also works well. I used that on cuts and scrapes for horses. It works well on hands. I don't know if I would use it for anything else though.

Vintage Pharmacology ?

Let me see if I have this down correctly:

Mane & Tail is for shampoo
DMSO is for aches and pains
Udder Butter is for hands (as a cream)
Bag Balm is for itching, burning, chafing, and shoe dressing.
Therma-Flex is for _____________?
Corona Ointment is for hands (nicks and cuts ?)

I grew up on a dairy farm and don't know any of this. :eusa_doh:
We must have been rather isolated in VA. ;)

In reverse the usage of human drugs in animals works well too. My White German Shepard got adequane (spelling?) shots every 6 months for arthritis. I gave him 4 extra pain free years I'd say....:(
