Vest Question

I have a great 90's ish gray Prince of Wales check, D. Pleats, Cuffs, Wider Legs and Lapels, and probably my favourite suit. However, I look at it and regret that it is not a three piece.

The Question: If you find the same exact suit, can a tailor fashion a vest out of the second jacket??

I am to attempt to find the suit using a series of numbers (Style #?) on the breast pocket tag.

Thanks :D

Best of luck finding the same suit.

I would have thought that the back panels would be of sufficient size to make fronts for a SB waistcoat.

Actually, I have heard (possibly on the Lounge) that it is possible to make a matching waistcoat from a spare pair of trousers.

Actually, I have heard (possibly on the Lounge) that it is possible to make a matching waistcoat from a spare pair of trousers.

It may have been me you heard that from since I did suggest the idea on the "three piece suits" thread. It just makes more sense to use the trousers as it would be a lot cheaper than buying another jacket, since trousers are usually less than half the price of of the jacket. I haven't tried this yet (or had a tailor try it) but I can't see why it wouldn't work. There should be enough fabric if the trousers are wide-legged. You would probably have to use a different lining, but a slightly mis-matched waistcoat lining won't be too obvious if the cloth is a perfect match.

However, as already mentioned, good luck finding the same suit again.

That's right, Alan. I remember now, I did hear it from you.

It makes sense to me because it's only the front panels that need to match the rest of the suit, the lining and back do not. There should be plenty of fabric in each trouser leg to make one front waistcoat panel.

The problem wouldn't be whether there's enough fabric, but whether the width between the seams is wide enough. On a pair of wide legged trousers it shouldn't be a problem but it could be difficult with a modern suit which has skinny trousers (why one would want to turn such an attoricity into a three piece suit is another issue).

Have you tired a non-matching but complementary waistcoat with the suit? that would be the easiest option all round. A light grey shade, perhaps...

+1 for the odd vest idea. I myself am a fan of this style. I'm sure a waistcoat could be fashioned from the fabric of another jacket, but what I would do before searching high and low to find another jacket just like it is check out some of the tailors in your area and their selection of fabrics. The tailor I frequent in Houston has over 3000 fabrics to choose from. Is the material of this suit have an oddball color or pattern?

It would have to be the exact same cloth by the same supplier in an identical suit. Not just a similar PoW.
