Hello all!

I just wanted to share something that was forwarded to me. This link will take you to a photo album, with a bunch of photos (mostly candid) of a fighter unit (the 78th) based on Iwo Jima. Apart from the obvious importance of the photos in general, there are many neat images of a variety of flight jackets being worn. Enjoy...........and remember.

Remarkable candids...makes one wonder how many fantastic photographs are still out there that have yet to make publication. Some of those we see here would have certainly been censored at the time. Not for the home front eyes for sure.

Very cool pics and to think that was living high on the hog compared to some units. Some very unusual patches too. One pic had one maybe two guys wearing M422A's. Was where the 51 was cut in half and duece and a half was on its side. Thanks for posting.

Very interesting. Some nasty looking stuff as well.

Just goes to show, not all landings are happy.

True. Every day they cheated death. But that's why we remember them.

On a lighter note, I had to laugh when I read the name of one of the men hooking up a tank of napalm to a P-51: "Cpl. Earless." He could have been in Catch-22 with a name like that.

On the subject of names....

I didn't notice our friend Earless, but I DID notice the name of one of the airplanes: "Drip 'n' Dick."

Now, I suppose the pilot MIGHT have been named Richard, and MIGHT have had a chief mechanic or something whose nickname was Drip....but.....

Thank you for posting these fantastic pictures. And more thanks, and honor, to those whose images they preserve.

My dad was on the Lexington (the Blue Ghost) in the Pacific including Iwo Jima but I never was able to get him to talk about it. War is indeed hell! I don't understand how those guys were able to maintain their sanity...

Thanks for the photos, and in color. Although some of them look like they may be modern day photos, from a movie, I think one of the comments was.
