For my money Vertigo contains a bunch of fantastic ideas but Stewart looks too old and like many other Hitchcock films it's overly theatrical, with an interminable script. Psycho is a far more evolved work with a fraction of the budget and a pacier screenplay.

I wouldn't say that MOST Hitchcock films are overly theatrical. Vertigo is surely the most theatrical of his 50's period. Rear Window isn't this broad. If you watch North by Northwest, made just the next year, its fairly under played.
