Vent holes on my VS...

Thanks, Eric. Here's the photo, the same as buler's. This one looks quite easy to replicate. I've been wondering if I could use my tool on straw hats... I have to get me a cheap, fairly tight weave to experiment...

Ale; Do not think of it as ruining a hat, but rather of making big vent holes. Really big vent holes.:D

Kidding aside, if the venting works, I would love vents in my straw Stetson Whippet. I picked it up on the many reccomondations I read on the forum, but my preference would be for it to have more ventilation.

Another straw whippet awaits, Eric -

I also can't believe that that small a pattern of tiny holes does anything but give the perception of cooling. But that's just me.

As for the holes in the top of the crown, doesn't your head get wet when it rains? Sort of defeats the purpose IMO. [huh]

Not my head. When it rains, or there's rain in the forecast, I bring an umbrella whether wearing straw or felt ;). I also doubt that much water would be able to pass through less or 1mm holes.[huh]

Excellent thread, Jimmy! I borrowed some of its pictures, hope you don't mind.
This Dobbs vents would be a piece of cake to replicate using my tool.

Back in 2007, I added diamond ventilation holes to my '30s Stetson Bantam. Made a template of the hole pattern; used it to mark the holes onto the hat; used a Dremel drill with a very small bit; and then very lightly sanded the felt around and in the new holes.

It takes a steady hand and some practice, but it works. If you do it right and the felt is thin enough, the holes don't close back up.

Not as nice-looking as Aureliano's results, but decent. Here's how it turned out:

Silly question, Marc. Did you do it on both sides of the hat? from ads and pictures, they always just show the side of the bow...
