I'm trying to decidee between the Mercury and the Enfield.
Love the clean looks of the Mercury, but alas, it has no adjusting straps. I'm afraid it'll be loose and sloppy looking at the waist.
Anybody have any idea how they're cut?
Pix?
Thanks all,

Mercury

I had a Mercury. Loved it. It had side-straps at the waist much like a Highwayman, which is essentially what the Mercury is, except for the shirt-type collar. Well made and very thick leather. I must admit though, that I prefer the look of the Enfield. It just seems to have less-modern lines. Either one will be a nice addition!

The Mercury shown on the Vanson site doesn't show any side straps at the waist. And it has the same shirt type collar as my Highwayman.
So???

my bad

You're right. No side straps. Thought I remembered them, but obviously not! :eusa_doh: As for the collar, I compared them when I got my Highwayman, and the Mercury seemed much thinner, like a shirt collar, rather than traditional jacket collar. Maybe it just laid oddly, I dunno. That's why I decided to send the Mercury down the road..... just didn't like the look as much as the Highwayman.

I don't have any first hand experience with the Mercury but in the photos off the Vanson site it looks the same as a Comet only with a different collar, I would guess a snug fit like the Comet but I would make a call to Vanson to be sure.

just my .02

they're both great jackets. the mercury looks a little cleaner in its lines, and is definitely a shorter jacket. i think the collar may be slightly larger than the enfield as well. i once owned a mercury in the midweight firenze, and sold it because the leather did not feel very high quality to me.

i currently own a competition weight enfield, and a good friend owns a competition weight mercury. the enfield is a heavier jacket, and not just because it has the additional weight of a couple of brass buckles. the wind flap is insanely thick, and--this may just be a fluke, but the leather on my enfield is quite a bit thicker than the weight on his mercury, although they're both the standard vanson competition weight hide. i think his mercury probably weighs in around 8 lbs, and the enfield is at elast 2 lbs heavier i'd say. i think the enfield might have a slightly slimmer cut than the mercury too, and the diagonal chest pocket i think adds to a generally less boxy and more slimming look on the enfield.

you really can't go wrong with either one though...
