My girlfriend, in her infinite snark tells me this is the "Worst thing i have ever bought" (the grizzly has been demoted!)
According to her, this makes me look like i am about to star in a hardcore gay porn version of Robin Hood ( She hesitates between calling it "The adventures of throbbin' Robin" or "Rubbin' wood, Prince of C*ck").

On one hand i can see where she is coming from, with the right leather chaps and cap this could really be a part of a decent BLUF outfit.
On the other hand so could a lot of other jackets we see worn here everyday!

So, what say you TFL? Is this a Friday night at the Blue Oyster kinda shirt? Or is it a racing shirt?

if a piece of clothing or accessories you think looks cool but you never dare to go out the house with it, then it doesn't work, if you find yourself don't have any self doubt about wearing it casually in public then it works for you, everyone is different in what they feel comfortable to wear in social setting.

personally I couldn't imagine a setting to wear leather "sweater" rather than jackets, and it has no pockets which is another big reason for me to wear a jacket for the extra pockets.

It's an interesting one. As some have already noted, there's a certain irony that other styles of jacket we don't blink an eye at round here are much more integral to the ToF look than this. I think what seems 'strange' about these racing shirts is that we just don't see them. My immediate mental image with these is relating to the lacing at the neck: makes me think of the quasi-traditional 'Jacobite shirt' that is popular as a less formal top to wear with a kilt. (Now there would be an interesting combo....). I can see this making a lot of sense as a riding shirt when spending long days in the saddle; I think I'd find it odd not being able to open it at the front, the choice being wear it or pull it off over my head, but like anything else I imagine you'd get used to that. There are things I've experimented with that I wasn't ure about to begin with - I'm thinking especially of my dungarees (US: overalls). quite liked the idea to begin with, wore 'em a bit, got used to the differences, enjoy them a lot now.

I can see this looking cool with some racing patches too, especially on the front panel.

About a month ago, a couple of good friends had a baby.
The day after the birth i went to the hospital to meet the baby and say hi.
I was in the underground car park walking towards the lift, and notice a group of three women about my age walking a few meters behind me. I get in the lift, and hold the door open so the women don't have to wait for the next lift.
They reach the open door, look at me strangely and just go stand in front of another closed lift. I let go of the door and the lift goes up.
Five minutes later, i am in my friends hospital room, the same three women walk in, looking like they have just seen death itself... We say hi awkwardly, cute baby, all is well, hang out a few minutes and then i leave.

A few days later, i met my friends again.
She comes up to me laughing and tells me:

You know the three friends of mine you met at the hospital? They told me they were in the car park and saw this "big scary looking man, with a big beard and a big scary black leather jacket". They didn't want to be in the same lift as the big scary man so they waited for the next one.
They all had a shock when they entered the room and you were there! They thought you were trying to steal our baby or something!

On that day i was wearing this jacket, only difference is i had a black watch cap on.:

I would have never thought a black bootlegger was intimidating! I actually consider it one of my less scary ones!

I guess that story made me think about how the "general public" sees the things we wear, and made me wonder how the TFL crowd would view this shirt, knowing that the vast majority of the "general public" would see it as pretty weird/extreme.
It's not going to stop me wearing whatever i want, i just thought TFL opinions would be interesting information.
I have to say i am actually surprised to see which way the poll is going!

Great story Carlos in so many ways. I’d have LOVED to have been the big scary guy sitting there when the women came in. I would have been the most polite kind person they ever met. Prob would have told them i was a Pastor or something.
Anyway, they should have realized the big scary leather jacket guy was probably the safest guy to be around in a parking garage and lift.
Ps: everytime i see a post of you it reminds me of a dear friend i worked with for 20 years. It’s uncanny.

Anyway, immediately as she saw you, she timidly said you have piercing, intense eyes. Not sure what that means, really... I find the way women see men is completely perplexing and I've long given up on trying to figure it out. But anyway, maybe those three saw the same thing? Plus the leather jacket...

It is pretty funny. I've been told once or twice in the past I can appear intimidating, which I find absolutely hilarious, given that I suspect a mugger would only have to wave a knife around and I'd come over all "take what you like, but don't hit my face!" Course, I used to seem a whole lot more threatening back in the day when they heard my Norn Irn accent. In these more peaceful times, folks just seem to expect those who sound like me to be all fiddle-de-dee and dance without using our arms.


I think a lot of folks have certain associations with the leather and the beards. In a watch cap, I suspect for a fair few this image is called to mind:

It never ceases to amaze me that leathers can still have that sort of reaction from a lot of folks, though... I can only assume I'm a lot more off-mainstream than I'd particularly realised.

Interesting it's predominantly *black* leather that gets that reaction, though. I wonder to what extend it's the colour, and to what extent it's the combination of the colour and leather.... On some level , I think a lot of people have internalised a much older association of black and negative / evil / "bad".... I well remember my own parent having this weird thing when I first started wanting to wear a lot of black, and a school trip where we were issued with an otherwise very liberal dress code, but the firm instruction "no all black". This was in the early 90s, too...
