Vanson C2RN “Renegade” thoughts? Any owners here?

Funny, I had the same exact thought but then you enter custom territory/cost and I just didnt feel strongly enough to make those changes. Hope i don’t regret that decision.
So they’ll hit ya with that for deleting eh? I figured subtractions would be no charge since the jacket isn’t hanging on a rack waiting to ship....

@ton312 have you considered the Laer x SOP cross zip?

https://www.snakeoilprovisions.com/...ts/sop-x-laer-new-standard-asymmetrical-black

I wouldn’t pick it up at full retail or anything close to the cost of an Aero but when they go on sale they’re competitive. I have a laer and its a little fashiony, but I like it. It was my first leather. Really soft but substantial cowhide. Great zippers unlike Aero. Made in the USA (if you’re into that). I’ve been meaning to do a review but I confess I’m lazy.

Vanson’s definition of Chicken Fried Steak:

  • Vanson Deer-Tanned Leather – Soft and supple naked leather, these skins are 1.1 mm in thickness. They are buttery soft natural leather in earthtone colors. This type of leather was used in the 60's for many cool San Francisco styles. Just like the originals, because there is no “sunscreen” (finish) on the leather, they will naturally age with the sun and the rain. With no finish, all the blemishes are highly visible, which, as ever, makes these skins very difficult to work with.

Seems like this deer tanned hide is a thing now. Schott has a CR in this now too....They describe it as thick, heavyweight and soft...and it looks it !!

I received my jacket last week but i haven’t had a chance to wear it yet. My initial impressions are: I don’t like how the waist flares a little and the leather doesn’t seem that impressive, but the verdict isn’t out yet. I need to get some wear time first before I can give a candid assessment. I’ll post some pics when I can.

Pics are essential! I’ve got cross zip fever again!

The waist flaring has gone away, so I retract that criticism. Overall, the jacket fits pretty well. Its snug, but that's how I like my crosszips - I tend to only wear them with t's or flannels without any layering. The dimensions are pretty spot-on, but the jacket seems to hang on my neck a little. That may be my fault since I opted for a snugger fit. For the price, Vanson delivers solid value. My only remaining gripe is while the leather has graining, the color is a dull and muted. I hope rain and wear will liven it some. My goal is to wear it regularly come fall, and I'll report back then. Until then, the jacket will get very little wear here in the South.

Thanks, man! Maybe I'm being a little too harsh on the leather. I'm probably unfairly comparing it to the nicer stuff I've handled at double-plus the price point. I will say it is incredibly soft without feeling delicate. It's comfortable from the jump. I also love the beefy main zippers. They blow aero zips out of the water. If I could have deleted the coin pocket and the zipped pockets, this would have been my ideal crosszip.

Very nice @Ayeteael. Great fit and looking at the beginning of sleeve creasing there makes me think that this jacket has good things in store for you.
As I recall, I was always underwhelmed with the hide on the new Vanson’s I received (with the exception of my Octagon Chopper) and only after wearing them a lot and wearing them out in the rain did I begin to see grain and character appear.

Thanks, @El Marro. I know if I put in the work, this jacket will only reward me. This is my attempt at recreating the commando at half the cost, but maybe i'll just bite the bullet and get one like you one day!
