The Arclight here in L.A. still uses ushers. Because seating is assigned, they pretty much have to because the numbers on the seats aren't all that clear. In addition, all screens have stadium seating and while they of course show movie trailers, they have a strict no-commercials policy. You do pay a premium for this: movies cost about $14 bucks, but you really do get what you pay for.
What mostly irks me about other, cheaper, theaters are all the damned TV commercials they show. They're getting subsidized, but they sure ain't passing it on to the customer.
I'd love to see a theater do a test: show the same picture on 2 screens, one with commercials that they charge, say, $5 bucks for and one without that charges $8 or $10. See if the consumer really would be willing to pay more for uninterrupted viewing.
