Update on the Hatted walking wounded

Sorry for the long post, but here is my update...Two fingers, hunting and pecking have just not been working out. I just have been in so much pain over the past months with little or no sleep on a daily basis to be coherent on the lounge. Please excuse my sorrow for not keeping up. I really do miss everyone, a lot.

My back surgery went well, it took away all of the sciatica pain. I was trying to get back into walking for rehab, and was really making some progress to recovery. Then, on Wednesday, 9/11/19, I had a severe fall in my driveway and broke my hand and two ribs. I still had a limp from before the back surgery and had a tendency to drag my left foot. I was walking down our sloped driveway to get something from my car, and my foot caught on the pavement and down I went. I hit the ground like a sack of cement. I was more concerned with saving my Borsalino Featherweight on my head than my own personal injury. The hat survived, I however, did not. Went to the urgent care the next day (Patty forced me to...) and the doctor came in and said "well, you broke some stuff!" I broke the bone in my hand for my little finger and my 6th and 7th ribs. They are the worst of the deal, breathing, coughing, sneezing and moving are very painful. Went to the Orthopedic specialist for my hand and found that they have to put pins in the break (which is near the joint in the wrist).

The surgery went well, I now have a "catcher's mitt" of a dressing. Pins come out in a month, then lots of PT, both for the back and hand. The hats are still worn everyday, just no photographic evidence. I have been going through a horrible dry spell in my collection.

On top of everything else, I am Stage Managing two shows right now at our community theater. My cast will not let me do much, but I am still in charge. We just opened "Mama Mia" this weekend, wonderful musical with all ABBA music! Next will be a comedy called "Tuna Does Vegas", two actors that play about 10 characters each. Great fun. I am considering this rehab to get through it.

I am so sorry to read about your ordeal... I'm glad to hear that you had some degree of relief/success with your back surgery. I retired effective June 30, 2018... and then in less than two weeks, I did a number on my back. I struggled with it for a bit... finally a dr decided that I needed an epidural to try to ease the pain... and that did absolutely nothing... another week of waiting and the dr decided I needed surgery on my L4/L5 discs... that did NOT go well at all... I was in horrible pain... greater than what it was prior to the surgery if possible...

I struggled with pain and an inability to walk until about the third week in October, 2018, when I finally got better... no pain.. walking great... no drop foot or dragging foot... I thought I had made it.

On Thuursday, November 8th, of last year, my brother realized that I was not answering my phone... not returning text messages... so he came to check on me... He found me on the floor near death...

I had developed a staph infection that, when it hit, just took me down... the drs figure I was on the floor for about 3 days...

I was in ICU for a week... and then in the hospital for another three weeks while they tried to figure out what exact infection I had and how to combat it. I was released, and then had home health care... physical therapy... occupational therapy... I could not walk... I had developed rhabdo in my shoulders and arms... it has been a nightmare.

On January 28th of this year, the infection returned... and I was back in ICU for about 5 days... went on another antibiotic... I am better... the infection has caused great damage to the vertebrae... the spine has collapsed at the point of damage and is pinching the sciatic nerve for my right leg... so at times, I resemble Frankenstein's monster when i walk...

I still restricted range of motion with my arms... I am going to have to have reverse shoulder replacements on each shoulder when the infectious disease doc is of the opinion that we have the infection under control... plus at some point, i am going to need another back surgery to brace up the spine where the bone erosion has occurred...

Needless to say, I am glad to be here... I damn near died...

Your misfortunes have reached the shores of Europe, we all want to send you our best wishes for a speedy recovery, so come on, there's a musical to produce, get a move on. Now when you done that you're invited to come over to the UK and do a musical based on the 1963 movie: "Beach Party." There's a bevy of beauties in the cast, well they were in 1963, but I reckon that if fine wine improves with age........

Thanks for the update, Mike. Your presence has definitely been noted and missed. Disappointing to hear about the setback, especially after what sounds to finally be some much needed good news and progress for your back. Well we're all getting older but when I was young I didn't have a decent 'proper' hat, just baseball caps (and that was before they were fashion items. So, while I have aches, pains and health conditions I have a good hat to wear, especially my Banjo Paterson which is current favourite. Wore it this morning as I exercised my leg and the rain seemed less severe.

Take care Gents and take heart - you are not alone and I'm sure good thoughts are being telepathed your way. In fact my best friend turned old when he turned 50. 50 year olds= kids!

So great to hear from you again, Mike. You've definitely had more than your fair share of injuries lately. Let's hope the hand was the last.
I must say, despite surgery and bad news from the doc, you look really good in the Stetson and Borsalino. Once a hatman always a hatman, I guess.
