Unpopular movie opinions...

during a discussion today, i remembered this thread. we were talking about "the scariest movies ever".

both "The Exorcist" and "Alien" got popular nods.

strangely, i saw both when i was less than ten years old and found both boring and predictable even then. i can still remember thinking that "The Exorcist" was funny, and that while watching "Alien" (with my parents opening weekend) i hoped that the monster would just eat the lady so she would stop running around and yelling.

conversely, "The Ring" terrified me and made sleep difficult for about three days. something about the Japanese ability to make the most mundane things scary.

I think it's time that I came out of the closet and admitted that I prefer the Flint films to the Bonds.
And I am British...... god, I'm so ashamed.....

I have fond memories of seeing those films with my father when I was about 8 or 9...But, yes, you should be ashamed...lol

One of only two movies I ever wlaked out on (the other was so bad, I can't remember the title) was He Said, She Said Some horrible Kevin Bacon/Elizabeth Perkins nonsense.

The only two movies that I've ever walked out on were Father of the Bride (the re-make, of course), and Jungle Fever. I think that I actually asked for my money back on the latter...

There is nothing wrong with Matt Helm movies. Plenty of scenery there.
I tried my first Balantine's a few months ago because of him.

The last film I saw in the cinema that truly gave me the willies for days was The Others. Definitely the psychological stuff is much more chilling than the obvious gore (which I, nevertheless, still love). I only saw The Exorcist for the first time recently. The one image I did finds genuinely quite unsettling was when the devil-child is briefly replaced by what I took to be an image of the ghost of the old priest, as he dies. Something a little chilling about that. (That and 'help an old altah boy, Faddah?"). Great film, though. I found it certainly held my interest, and I did 'enjoy' it (wrong as that word seems!).

You want to talk disturbing then you definitely have to include Hostel in that one. I don't want to see it again or even the second one either. :eusa_doh:

yep. too much for me. just can't get into the modern resurgence of exploitation/torture-porn films. i kept hearing about "The Human Centipede" and it's rave reviews over at the Rue Morgue Magazine forum (which i usually enjoy). couldn't even make it through the trailer.....*shudder/bleh*

I can't remember whether I've seen that or not. I've seen a few of the Saw franchise, which I regard as the beginning of the latest strain of, as you put it, torture-porn. The Saws I, eh, saw were twisted, certainly, but clever with it and had a decent story. I don't mind gore, myself, but there has to be a story or i get bored. The horror genre, like most anything else in contemporary mainstream cinema, certainly has its fair share of films that are all effects over substance. I suppose like anything else it's that temptation to do it 'because we can', as opposed to whether it serves the story. The George Lucas school of cinema, if you like.

I heard about that particular movie and saw the trailer and it disgusted me - Roger Ebert refused to rate the movie and gave it no stars - he had this to say:

“I am required to award stars to movies I review. This time, I refuse to do it. The star rating system is unsuited to this film. Is the movie good? Is it bad? Does it matter? It is what it is and occupies a world where the stars don’t shine.”

I hated "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" I wanted to hurt every character in that movie. I wanted them to shut up. I only sat through the film cause it was for a film class in college. Almost walked out of the class at that point.

Bergman's film "Persona" also for the same film class. I had to write a two page summary about the film. I somehow described in two pages, with lots of filler, I had no idea what the hell the movie was about.

Early talkies (1929 to 1935 or so) Lots of dialogue and standing around, no music or continuoues music that doesn't match with what's going on in the movie.

That was indeed a torture-porn movie describes it pretty well. It was extreme to say the least. I have also heard so described as Sci-fi Thriller Pornos as well. :eusa_doh:
I have never even heard of The Human Centipede. Geez, how low can movies go? :eusa_doh:

Saw is another steaming pile of manure. I have never seen one all the way through. The whole thing was far-fetched and ridiculous. If I wanted that, I could watch The Abyss. That was a pile as well. :eusa_doh:

Oh, I don't know - I felt the Human Centipede was underwhelming. [huh]

One of my summertime staff (late teens) was talking about this movie and how cool/awesome it was. When he got to a certain part I told him to stop and never mention it again in my presence or he risked immediate lack of employment. I dont get some of the things that pass for entertainment nowadays.

Movies like those don't bother me anywhere near as much as living in a culture that produces movies like those does.
