Unexpected Awesome Find

I spent this past weekend at the big Tulsa gun show. It’s an interesting show in that there are many other things to look at besides firearms, such a western artifacts, art, and memorabilia and…some hats. Near closing time on the last day, I saw one vendor had four hats on his table, two cloth bucket hats and two really nice westerns. I was immediately drawn to this one as, though it appeared to be an Open Road, it was obviously not a Stetson, but a custom job which appeared to be 100% beaver. Turned out to be from Rand’s Custom Hats in Billings, MT. and I was right that it was pure beaver! The hat was custom made for the seller but he never wore it much. (Unfortunately, I forgot to ask him whether it was made before or after Ritch Rand sold the business in 2020.) The good news was that it was my size. The best news was the price…$100. Yep, $100 for a pure beaver, custom Rand hat! I went to the show with keeping an eye out for hats in the back of my mind as there are almost always some for sale, usually nothing of interest to me. This one was definitely interesting and then some!

But now I have a dilemma; I already have a 6X Stetson OR in Fawn color that is very similar to the Rand (see 2nd pic). Under some light, the colors are even closer than in the photo. Given the Rand is pure beaver, I’m tempted to re-crown it to more of a fedora shape as was often done with ORs in days past. Re-doing the 6x, machine-pressed Stetson would be more of a task. Don ‘t want to sell the Stetson but they are very similar in appearance.

The rest of the story is that while I was talking to the vendor, another gentleman walked up and picked up the other cowboy hat and said to the vendor “I’m getting ready to leave. What’s your rock bottom on this one?” They had obviously negotiated on that one earlier. Vendor said “$200”. The man countered with $150. Vendor said “Split the difference with me…$175”. Sold! I asked the gentleman what the hat was; another Rand pure beaver, this one more of a contemporary cattleman crease style in silverbelly. Easily a $1000 hat today. I had been so focused on the OR that I had yet to even look at the silverbelly. Had the other gentleman not shown up, I would have bought them both. But I’m happy with the one I got.

Congratulations on a great find! If you can gently roll out the sweat you should find handwritten info on the back concerning order #, date, sizing, felt & name of employee who made it. I’m assuming the new Rand owners have carried that policy over from Ritch should it be a newer hat.

Hi Jack. Thanks for the information. The inside of the sweat says “23 3/8, 80376, 3-27-3, DR.C.”, and what appear to be a couple of cursive letters I can’t make out. Unfortunately I don’t know what decade the year “3” is.

The cursive letters are initials of the hatter/employee (I’ve seen that before). 80376 would be the original order/ticket number. That ticket is probably still among company records but good luck in getting it now. 23-3/8 is obviously the circumference & Dr. C the customer. My All Natural Beaver Rand was made in 1993 so I know Ritch was offering it then. At that time it was ~$500. That may help in pinning down the date some.

Excellent score! I would 101% rebash that badboy into a Fedora style, (though bias declared - I don't think a cattleman crease looks quite right on me, so it's not one I'd personally consider anyhow). Enjoy it, however you shape it.

Thanks for the additional information, Jack. The condition of the sweat (not bad, just showing some drying/stiffness) could certainly be consistent with a 1993 date. And the outside of the sweat says "Natural Beaver". Plus, the seller had a notecard attached to the hat that said it was "$500+ new" which also fits with your hat's date. However, it also has the customer's name stamped on it which does not match the "DR.C." handwritten on the inside. So not sure about that. Thanks again for your input!

I have no explanation for the Dr. C vs owners sweat stamp. You can sure see the difference in quality vs the 6X pictured together.

His last name escapes my memory at the moment but Ritch had a long time hatter named Randy & you see a lot of hats with his signature behind the sweat. I have no idea if he now works for the new owners or not but I recently saw the name of Law Dog Hat Company in Billings & wondered if that was him.

It’s been a while but I have walked the floors of the Tulsa Gun Show before. I have some artifacts in my collection from the 101 Ranch Wild West Show that I found there.

Since you’re at Norman, I’ll ask. Do you know if the original farmhouse outside of Fletcher that Frank & Annie James lived in still stands? They left there in 1911.

Jack, if I were to hazard a guess,, the first letter of the cursive writing looks like it may be an R so maybe it was done by Randy. As to the James house in Fletcher, I do not know. A quick Google returned articles on him having lived there but nothing of its current status.

Edward, I decided to proceed with the re-bash but nothing radical. Left the brim alone as well as the center dent. Just shortened the length of the side dents and gave them a bit of a pinch so they are no longer parallel. So the hat still retains much of its western character but it's no longer a near duplicate of my 6X Stetson OR style wise. I already have a feeling this little fella is going to be a favorite.

This Rand looked great before but I have to say I really like what you’ve done with the pinches

Interesting that both hats retain their western vibe despite having their crowns modified to more of a fedora crease.
I agree! And vice versa, more fedora sized hats shaped in traditionally more western creases! I’ve been looking at a lot of old pictures from the 30s and 40s Texas, cattlemen and lawmen alike. They were wearing a lot of hats like this back then. I’m enjoying seeing more people bring this style back!
Pictured here is Ben Maney Gault in a really good example of the hat style, and also my rebashed Stratoliner (mid 50s make)
