Underwater adhesive tape?

I was hoping to hear the use for the tape (ok, not exactly an exciting day here) -- so, if the tape can touch itself, that is if it can wrap around something and come back to itself, then if you can find 3M's high voltage electrical insulating tape, that will work. This only looks like "regular" black electrical tape. It is 10 times thicker, and on the roll it is separated by a thin red plastic membrane, so you pull that membrane out to unroll it.
When high-voltage lines are spliced together, a steel fastener is used to clamp them, then this tape is wrapped around the fastener to seal it from water.
It is a complete, total, utter, memorable beyond belief [did I say total?] pain in a large body part to get this stuff off of a fastener IF one were to accidentally clamp the wrong wires together.
Theoretically, of course. I have heard and have no actual knowledge. None of you, I am certain, would ever think I would be dumb enough to grab the wrong color (!) half-inch thick cable and fasten it together.
Have a big knife if you need to get this tape off. Once wrapped on, it seals in just a few minutes. Various curses did not seem to help, either! Amazing.

tape used in surgery or medicine that maintains adhesion while being impervious to water or perspiration?

perhaps its being used for undersea medical applications- quick first aid or triage in the diving bell- then back out to sea- a la Jacques Cousteau?[huh]

A progress report. I bought Duck brand underwater tape. It is metalized fabric with adhesive. I put a small rectangle of the tape inside my NCAA championship ring (I'm not the man I fantasized I once was). I'm in the fourth month of constant wear. It comes off only to shower. No odor. No release or movement from the tape. It appears to be permanent - unless I jump through hoops to remove it. It does exactly what I wanted done.

An unanticipated problem: What do I do with the remaining tape?
