Underarm Deodorant?

Is this something of the modern age? I don't recall seeing any ads for deodorant in any of my vintage magazines.

What do the guys here use?

I have gone from expensive cologne-based ones, to all natural, to good old fashion Old Spice deodorant.

Aluminum chlorhydrate

This is the stuff that made modern deodorants possible. My understanding is that aluminum chlorhydrate paralyzes the sweat glands under the arms, thereby suppressing the sweating function. If we covered our entire bodies with the stuff it might be fatal, but only shutting down the pits is probably pretty benign. And also, I believe the sweat glands in the pits exude other chemicals when we get nervous or over stimulated, that create that ever so popular B.O aroma.
I suspect that this stuff was discovered in the 1950's, but that's just a guess.

Not to be nitpicky - but that is antiperspirant. You can have deodorant without an antiperspirant. A deodorant would just cover the stick and not keep you from sweating. Would men of the golden age had such a product or did they just smell...ummm...like "men?" Or did that dump on the cologne? I know, I must have too much time on my hands.

I don't know about men, but antiperspirants and deodorants are both heavily advertised on the 20s and 30s ladies magazines.
Maybe they had different brand names aimed at men...but I am sure they were marketing to them!
Dew was the first womens antiperspirant, and Mum the first deodorant.

Funny, when I logged on, I would have never guessed I'd wind up doing some research on the history of deodorant, but here's what I found (from Wikipedia and About.com, edited and shortened)

--Mum was the first commercial underarm deodorant. The original formulation was invented in 1888, by an unknown inventor from Philadelphia.

--In the late 1940s, Helen Barnett Diserens joined the Mum production team. A suggestion by a colleague inspired her to develop an underarm deodorant using the same principle as the newly-invented ballpoint pen. The new applicator was tested in the USA in 1952 and marketed as Ban Roll-On.

--The modern formulation of the antiperspirant was patented by Jules Montenier on January 28, 1941. This patent solved the problem of the excessive acidity of aluminium chloride and its excessive irritation of the skin, by combining it with a soluble nitrile or a similar compound. This formulation was first found in "Stopette" deodorant spray.

--The first anti-perspirant aerosol deodorant was launched in 1965.

Wild Ginger (for men)...

Now, 'before' you gents get all 'hot and bothered' thinking this has something to do with the gorgeous 'Ginger Rodgers' ...well, sorry to disappoint

I discovered this deo/body spray about a year ago now. It's pretty well bargain basement prices and has the scent of...Ginger (the root, not the lady!).

I wanted something that was masculine, had a vintage 'feel' to it and would work with the aftershaves/hair dressing that I tend to use, ie: Bay Rum, and scents with a deep range of leather/cigar tobacco notes to them. And VOILA, the Ginger works great.

Perspirant- perspiration or sweat

Its like a sweat blocker used in deodorants to keep you from dripping through your clothes

One can be the other, or have the other in it or not. The words just seem to have gotten folded into one another.

As a person that has very bad reactions to anti-persperants, it is imperative for me to be sure Not to pick one up by mistake. So it is a distinction I am very concerned with. I have always liked Old Spice but have used the Mennen brand on occasion.

It's got no aluminum and no other bad stuff, and it's the only natural deodorant that works for me.

If you want a natural deodorant, go to Lush. I use a couple of their natural deodorant bars: one based on sandalwood and another on patchouli (a lot more subtle than it sounds).

If you can afford it, oud-based perfume makes a good natural alternative deodorant.

I personally can't stand anything gooey or of a gel consistancy and the spray on stuff doesn't cut it for me either. I use a powder based stick.

For some reason this breaks honey out something fierce. The old fashioned Old Spice that is white does not. Even the old fashioned blue gel does though.
I tried the aluminum free something and evidently it is the aluminum that makes you not stink.

Brian: You're welcome. It turned out to be pretty interesting, especially the ball point pen part.

I remember seeing a NY Times article a bit ago that questioned the need for it, but I think all the dermatologists who said that we may not really need it, or at least much of it if we keep clean, still use it themselves.

I just use Degree, since it seems my skin doesn't react badly to it. The other problem I have is that it's tough to find a non-scented (or at least nothing more than powder/fresh-scented) stick, since I'd rather use cologne or something for scent. the last time I was looking through the rack at all the variations, I was thinking, "I just want non-stinky."

I've always used the old fashion style "Old Spice" deodorant....plus Mennon aftershave....just like my Father before me. I've tried others on occassion...but found nothing new ever suited me near as well....
