Unaltered 1920s Aussie Californian Bungalow

A time capsule house that was across the road from where I once lived. It is on the market and these snaps give an idea of life in post WW I Sydney. Note the residual leadlighting from the Art Nouveau era combined with the onset of the Arts and Craft frugality of the 1920s (blue bricks etc). The Arts and Craft Style was of course already passe having started in the 1880s in the UK. But such was the tyranny of distance for the Antipodes in the pre-computer era. Three of these bungalows were built from the cut up of a previous Victorian waterfront estate. Yes...you are on the waterfront at Manly on Sydney Harbour.

Omg Binkie the thought of that happening to that beautiful home makes me want to cry! The exact same thing happened to my nan's house from the 30's that she and my pop had designed themselves. When she passed the people that bought it knocked it down and built ugly units on it. It was a really large block of land. It shouldn't be allowed.:rage:

I like the organ in the corner. Would be a useful shot for a thread on "When good generations go bad".

There is something about that generation, as it entered the 1960's, when they added touches to their homes that turned sublime into suburban.

The leather Jason recliner is another - pre war solidity traded for three position comfort.

But what incredable bones! Hope they dont knock it down.

Just too small a block...but yes it will be knocked down for something bigger...that street was (until 1960s) an avenue of Edwardian and Victorian mansions and substantial homes...now it is festooned with blocks of (design free) flats...

For instance the family home of Sir Roden Cutler VC (the only artillery guy to get a Victoria Cross and longest serving Govenor of NSW) was bowled over and is a vacant block awaiting a new block of flats (See rear of pic). From his house you could see directly across Spring Cove to the Officer's Mess of the School of Artliilery (now transferred to Puckapunyal Victoria) which was his old Regiment. Nostalgia and history, however, come after property developers in Sydney in the priority order.... :rage:

Yeah it is a one way in and out street peninsula in Manly jutting west into the Harbour. Traditionally it was the best street in Manly but not now....the ocean side is preferred with the views up the coast.

I see it now. Glass, stainless steel, champagne colored marble, slate, recessed lights and lots of gainsville & dare gallery furniture.

Oh, it isn't going for modernization, it is going so a property developer can make a vast, vast profit at the expense of destroying another (albeit small) piece of the nations architectural heritage.

I meant to imply "modernization" of the neighborhood, realizing that the house was hoplessly meant to fade into history.
