Wore a G1 all weekend over here and at times could have done with more warmth.
I know a lot of Aviators that have had their jackets converted to have side pockets or they just buy the commercially made ones. I would say that the G-1 in the Navy is the most valued and at the same time under appreciated piece of gear issued to an aviator. I also know guys that have been flying in the Navy for over 15 years and didn't realize the G-1 had a throat latch on it. To most Aviators, they see brown leather and a fur collar and think that it must be the same as issued gear.
ELC D1! Best shearling I've ever owned...gets a lot of use compared to my Irvin and has pockets for both my phone and wallet 10/10 in my opinion :-D Weather gets too much (rare over here) then I've the Irvin option or putting a C3 vest under the D1...lovely!
Air comfort does look good though!
I am not sure if these are the converted/commercial jackets you mentioned but I do see side pockets in lots of these photos.I know a lot of Aviators that have had their jackets converted to have side pockets or they just buy the commercially made ones.
