Have to get this out of the way first....I need to extend a huge THANKS to Schott. On Tuesday at 3pm I emailed Schott a question about their Epaulet Stars. The very first “real” and “expensive” leather jacket I ever purchased was my now Punk Rock Schott 618HH. I chose potentially having a faux fur collar (which I purchased) over having stars. Over the years I’ve possessed many Schotts with stars including a 613SH that must have been made of especially nice hide cause it was as thick as any vanson CW I’ve had, but so stupidly sold or traded them all away. Also a few months ago I came across a Vanson for sale with gold or brass epaulet stars very similar to my 90s Vanson. I emailed Vanson and they told me they were never part of their design and added afterwards and didn’t have any to sell.

Which leads me to my email on Tuesday Afternoon. I asked how much epaulet stars cost and if they came in any other colors as I’ve seen some models with them. Jerri emailed me back later that day and told me they carried Silver, Black, Brass and Antique Brass. I asked for pictures which they don’t have. I then asked well I can’t decide if I want silver or black for my 618...and I’m not too familiar with their brass or antique brass for my Vanson and so could I send Jerri pictures to get their personal opinion and they agreed. They responded they also couldn’t decide on black or silver but picked their brass for my Vanson. Jerri said give me your address I’m sending you the black, silver and brass at no charge, no shipping, you’ll get them in a week this was done by Wednesday afternoon. And they have arrived today already.

Round of applause for dealing with all my questions, answering them all in less than 24 hours, allowing me to send them pictures for advice, advice on a jacket they didn’t make. Then sending them to me in less than a week.

Now for the jackets. Here’s the deal.

Silver-the rest of the hardware is silver, silver is traditional and go to, silver stands out, silver is the rock and roll look. The negative is, that it is traditional and expected and fits in.

Black- Punk Rock, different, not expected, goes against the norm. Since the rest of the hardware isnt black..the black stars could fade right into the leather.

Not sure if this is the right Brass for this. It is based on Jerri’s Opinion before I attach I may ask to be sent the other brass and compare which I like best. But in any case they were free and sent in less than a week.

EDIT: For those eagle eyed like @HoosierDaddy who pointed out the brass appears antique. I believe he’s right but will have to confirm. In our email exchanges Jerri said she believed the antique brass would match best and would send those. But my invoice that came with the stars simply says brass. So I have referred to them in this thread as brass since that’s what the invoice said. But I believe they are actually the antique as discussed.

And the brass were never in question. Those were always going on the vanson. Just the silver and black are in play, POLL at the top of this thread.

Really, really cool of Schott to do that. They're not some small time business, they certainly didn't have to do it and I can imagine they must be buried in mail and questions and stuff on a daily basis but still, they took the time and sent you the stars. Treated you like you're their only customer. It's exactly what Schott advertises the company is all about so them proving it makes me really happy. That's what you call good marketing. Especially from a maker that deals with Supreme, Chrome Hearts, Balenciaga, etc.

Well anyway... I can't decide either. But you know what, I'd go with black stars. It's something different. And even if they bland with the leather... They're there and whoever actually cares to notice, I'm sure they'd find it much cooler that way. I would!

Simple IMO. Silver on the MC jacket with silver hardware and the antiqued brass with the brass hardware. Black would fit in with a jacket that has black hardware.
Yup the brass is going on the vanson for sure. I just might contact Schott to get the other antique brass to see which I like better. But definitely the brass with the brass.

Those brass stars look slightly 'antiqued' to me.....
Yeah see that’s thing I’m confused about. Jerri said antique in the email. And I confirmed antique in my email. But the order sheet that came with them only says brass. I suppose it could be a mistake on the order sheet. And these are in fact antique and I would need to see the brass. I’m leaning towards that being the case. But since the sheet says brass that’s what I’m going with.

Exactly man. They must get hundreds of emails and to get this all worked out in less than 24 hours. To send them free of charge, not even shipping, and have them arrive in less than a week. Realistically they weren’t shipped until Thursday and no mail on Sundays. A large company like Schott doesn’t need to be that responsive and take that much care. This was a really great experience with them.

I'd go with what HD suggests and match the other hardware on the jacket as it will look the most natural. Black would be cool too though...bit more subtle. Either way for Schott to do that is cool AF. Well done Schott!

Tony's thoughts mirror mine on this topic. Congrats to Schott for this great Customer Service here - did they realize this would get posted to FL and get thier reputation a boost all over the world? :)

Exactly. Silver for me every time with the silvetone hardware. I'm not a fan of black hardware at all - reminds me too much of late 80s/early 90s padded motorcycle jackets of a style I never did care for. The chrome is a bit more in yer face. Johnny THunders would approve. And remember what Uncle Joe used to say: "Like Trousers, Like Brain."

Yeah see that’s thing I’m confused about. Jerri said antique in the email. And I confirmed antique in my email. But the order sheet that came with them only says brass. Is it plausible that the only brass option they offer is antiqued brass, and therefore no need to distinguish between antiqued or shiny brass, just one kind, hence 'brass'?

The ones I'm always on the lookout for are bigger stars with a central rivit, as worn on the back of Meatloaf's Eddie jacket...

Quick little update. As suspected the receipt that said brass was wrong and these are the antique. Schott is sending the regular brass to me free, to see which brass looks better. So that’s going to be 4 sets of stars for free, no shipping, and the brass was requested for a Vanson they should have no interest in helping.

Also in my talks with Jerri I mentioned how the Legendary Black Stallion is pretty much universally loved for its design amongst collectors but could have a better version made up. For the original cost i believe was like 500-600 probably in that range was fine. But was nothing special or a cut above so to speak. I told her they should make it again as an actual Schott USA jacket and use their thicker nicer leather they have on their 613SH. Or it would be the perfect design to do in one of their semi-regular these days Horween collabs. To my surprise instead of saying yeah nice thought or ignoring me she actually said she would pass it on as it made sense and was a good idea. I’m not foolish enough to believe anything at all would ever come from it or anyone would carehaha. But hey if this happens in the next year I demand a free or at least discounted model! Ha
