I've seen a lot of vintage sweaters, including Fair Isle sweaters with those buttons.

I think unless you want some sort of 80's esque off the shoulder look......I would avoid the unbuttoned shoulder buttons...really.

So... basically they are just there to avoid stretching of the collar area when putting the sweater on then.

The button neck also might facilitate pulling it over layers of shirts and such – since Norwegians traditionally wear their sweaters on the outside.

They're both Polo by Ralph Lauren. They're new - regular price was almost $300 each. I found them on sale at Macy's for about $60 - and I happened to hit "buy one, get one free" day!

So both were around $65.

they are also found on the traditional Breton jumper. the stripey boating jumper from Brittany, France.

Beautiful fabrics- beautiful fit! I found a few fairisle sweaters at the Ralph Lauren shop in the Hong Kong airport, but the armholes were sewn on strangely. The underarms were like crooked or something, so I had to pass up on them.

I call sweaters like these "All Creatures Great and Small" sweaters. I've always wanted one of those hand knit sweaters that Tristram always sported in the show, especially the sleeveless v-neck pullovers, that the Brits call "jerkins". (I don't know about the shoulder button thing, tho.)

They did once, but found the winters too mild and Lake Erie badly lacking in fjords.
