I'm getting my driving license this november and so I thought about what kind of car would be most golden era looking, but still be affordable(cars are much more expensive in Germany than in the USA).

Here are my results:

1. The VW K?§fer(Beetle)

2. Citroen 2CV

Both were produced since the 40s so the designs actually are vintage, but I'd like to know which one prefer!?

Citroen 2CV gets my vote.

Being in the rural midwest USA, I've seen the Beetles around here and there for years but I've never seen anything like the Citroen in these parts, far more exotic to my eyes! (I dont know how common they are over in your neck of the woods.)

That aside, it simply looks fun to drive!

I'm partial to the VW because I had one. Quirky but reliable and fun to drive once one gets the hang of it. (I bent my fenders several times on wet, snowy roads due to the feather-light front end.) :eusa_doh:

I voted for the VW. Why? Because one of these days some one will find that VW Herbie was based from!! lol
I've just always loved the bugs. [huh] Has to be the Herbie connection from being a kid and watching the movies.

How easy is it to get parts for the Citroen? If they have to special ordered, or cost much more than VW parts, I'd definitely go with the VW.

They're both vintage looking. My first car was a Beetle. Since the tank is in front of the dashboard, they smell like gasoline inside all the time.

I'd go with the Citroen because of uniqueness, but perhaps they are not so unique in Deutschland?

You must have had a leaky gas tank.
Seems that Citroens are not even sold in this country according to this,...http://www.citroen.com/CWW/en-US/ABOUTCITROEN/CITROENINTHEWORLD/CitroenInTheWorld/
Come to think of it, I recall seeing only one Citroen in my entire life driving down the road.

On looks alone the Citroen 2CV hands down. One sees beetles all over but the Citroen is really unique and vintage looking (I especially love the grille).

Could have been a leaky gas tank. Depending on the age, it could have been something else. The late-model beetles had a plastic filter box on the gas tank vent line in front of the dashboard. That box tended to crack with age and let some fuel spill out when the tank was full. I had that problem on my '74 Superbeetle.

For the record, I had a '62 beetle, '66 beetle, '68 bus, and '74 Superbeetle. I enjoyed each one; each had its own merits, quirks, and personality. And each had a name.

The Citroen is cool, but VWs are fun and the story of VW is inspiring. Find a copy of Walter Henry Nelson's book Small Wonder: The Amazing Story of the Volkswagen Beetle and see for yourself.

I, too, would get the Citroen because of it's unique design. Beetles were made by the millions and are everywhere, but the 2CV is rarely seen - in the USA, at least.

Reluctantly, I'd have to go with the Volkswagon.
When I think of acquiring an automobile, my first thought is safety. There are just too many careless drivers out there for that not to be a primary concern. Therefore, I want one that my passengers and I will walk away from after an accident. The VW did pretty good in all of the IIHS tests except the side impact where it was rated poor. There was no information about the Citroen. That doesn't mean the Citroen did badly, but until I know it did as good or better, I'll go with the VW.
If the safety pieces are equal or comparable, I'd definitely without hesitation get the Citroen. :eusa_clap
Yeah I know: parts, repair, other servicing hassles, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
Irrelevant!
Not only is it hands down the coolest vehicle out there, but we are all in agreement that style is the worthy reward of any extra maintenance (and grease laden fingers;)

My grandmother told me that when my dad had a Beetle in the late 50s, Beetle owners would give each other a friendly toot and wave whenever they passed on the road. :) By the time I came along we had a VW bus, then a VW hatchback, then another Beetle that my mom learned how to drive.
We were without a car for most of the 80s, and then after that it was only used cars, until my dad decided he deserved a new car. He wistfully said he wanted another Beetle but at age 80 would have a difficult time getting in and out of it, so he got a Subaru WRX.

Regardless, if I'll get a VW or a Citroen, this what I'm going to do with the engine hood:

Here the owner used the front lid of a Citroen 11CV Traction Avant, but of course you can use any other that fits passably well. My Dad also told me that it's not a difficult jod to do.

Henrik

I voted for the VW but can't you pick up an old Mini for a similar price?

I had a "souped up" Mini when I was at uni, cheap to run, fix, and went like the clappers :D

I like the canopy on this one:

A little newer, but the look is good:
