I don't know if three buttons are considered vintage, but they just strike me as very 1990's.

I never saw a 2-button jacket before 1965, and very few before 1970. (This is from a UK perspective - other countries probably had other preferences.)

Traditionally, for a single breasted peak lapel suit, what style of vest goes with it? Do they make single breasted peak lapel vests?

Both single-breasted and double-breasted vests go with it.

Single-breasted peak lapel vests are very rare. I've only seen one or two vintage tuxedo vests with peak lapels, and never any business vests.

I suppose I will not take Mr Bown's sartorial advise and be suggested as ignorant. Much better than being a pompous ass. I spent the morning looking over fabrics. I found six possible fabrics however three are in the running and one other possible. The fourth is an all wool medium gray with a pale white windowpane pattern. I really want a solid light gray. the other three are a pale gray solid in wool, a cats-eye pattern light gray in cashmere and silk and a small nail-head pattern in black and white in Merino wool and silk.

But he wears Berluti.

Something wrong with Berluti? Other than being undoubtedly over-priced.

(I admit that i don't keep up with latest fads in "which shoes shall we deride this week" on "style" forums. I read one thread only on a much frequented forum that went off on one re: Crockett and Jones while orgasming over Allen Edmonds. Needless to say i've yet to return.*)

bk

* Not that i have anything for or against the brands here named. Simply the point that "style" forum participants tend to get rather worked up over their own pet brands …

What about a finely patterned grey/gray tweed?
A Donegal, or Shetland, etc...
That last one is a heavy one but I'd love a suit in it.

The fabric would be great on a suit, but a double-breasted vest made of tweed might look (and feel) a bit too chunky. Instead, I'd wear a doeskin double-breasted vest with a tweed suit.

"The single-breasted jacket should have three front buttons. Two front buttons suggest ignorance; one front button suggests rakishness." - Francis Bown, Bown's Bespoke

(OFF TOPIC): If I didn't know that Bown was serious I'd think I was reading a satirical site like The Chap. Pomposity without the intentional laughs (or guffaws, maybe an occasional chortle. Never a snicker. Too utterly common and vulgar!).

I've always thought the proportions of this suit were just about perfect. You could raise the top button a little--an inch or so--but not too far.

I was under the impression that you do not button a single breasted suit when you wear a vest. This picture proves otherwise. Is there an actual rule here or just personal preference?
