TV's in restaurant lounges

You can choose not to patronize a bar with TVs but how about doctors' offices? Before my Mom died I just about went freakin nuts trying to shut out that assinine Oprah-style blabbering or soap operas, or citizens court-type crap at many damned medical offices.:rage:

I never had that experience here--thank God. :eusa_doh: That would really turn me off. I think I would get up and turn it off if it was me. Oprah! No way! :rage:

Oprah has to go. All that Touchy Feely stuff and Tom Cruise jumpin' on the sofa is for the birds. A nice bar for a good conversation without all the noise. A nice (reasonably) priced Marty or Manhattan or Absolute whatever and nice company. Duh...is that too much to ask even with some nice music on FM?

For all of you that hate to have a TV droning in the background in public places, there is a solution.

I bought a keychain device called TV-B-Gone that will turn off just about every television made!

I've used it covertly in dozens of places to kill the annoying television babble.
Now I can zap those boob tubes from 20 to 50 feet away and alot of the time no one even notices. The little remote costs around 15 bucks and may take up to one minute to scan thru over 200 TV codes, but usually it takes under 20 seconds to kill a TV.

I've used it in consumer electronics stores, bars, hotels, lobbys, airports, malls , etc......

Most folks that notice the switch off will just stare at the now shut off screen and then look around as if for help. One fellow on the Web has taken the guts of the device and hidden into an old cell phone for stealth reasons.

I do not recommend doing in a sports bar, however.

I agree with you.

I hate TV in restraunts too, with a passion. The only acceptation Ive ever encountered was this upscale Mexican restraunt a few blocks from where I live where they have this GIANT plasma tv high up behind their bar playing old B&W movies from Mexico from the 1940-50s on mute.

It works well as a great backdrop to the decor.

Here in Hollywood, we have a "Denny's" restaurant whose lounge is often full of TVs. As in transvestites. lol

.

Every restaurant is full of transvestites. Some are just more convincing than others. :p lol

Re: TV-B-Gone lol Reminds me of that movie Grumpy Old Men when Walter Mathau had a remote that worked on Jack Lemon's TV from next door. Drove him nuts. I could have fun in a waiting room!!:)

A Fine Example...Just WRONG...

Folks,

A fine example of what should never happen. Here is one of my hang outs here in San Francisco. The joint is called "The Pied Piper" named after the mural on the wall. It's one of San Francisco's 'almost' untouched bars that opened in the 30's. Below is the virtual tour...if you'll notice there are TWO STINKING televisions in the joint. They have since been replaced by HUGE 63 inch plasmas and it just makes me sick. When the televisions are off, you are surrounded by a TOTALLY 30s bar. It's just you, your cocktail, the pictures of San Francisco of a bygone era and 30s to 60s music. It's usually the 30s and 40s when I'm in there because the boys know I'm there to have a cocktail, and enjoy the ambiance. They've taken to turning off the televisions occasionally which is just great.

I have to agree, Fedora Gent. The Pied Piper is one of the treasured spaces in the City and those bl--dy televisions just about cancel it out. I still take visiting friends with an artistic bent there because it is an original Maxfield Parrish behind the bar, but still... On of the reasons my preferred sit-down bar in the City is Le Central is because the televison is kept off and hidden out of view except under special circumstances.

I love the Garden Court, as well. The Palace is a gem.

Le Central is a gem, a bunch of places are great for vintage jaunts. I used to like Top of the Mark but it's become REALLY modern and it just KILLS me. The old Peacock Room at the Mark is gone too. I used to hang out at the Cafe Majestic at the Hotel Majestic at the corner of Sutter and Gough but stupidly they closed that due to an expired liquor license. These days I literally hang my hat at Club Deluxe, Ab Zam Zam and other vintage places in The City.

I used to go to the Club Deluxe on Haight St. about 10 years ago. There was a good crowd of vintage inspired people at the time. I haven't been there for some time though. The house band used to be "Atomic Cocktail" I think...
