Just finished band practice last night about 9:30, and I'll be humming these numbers all weekend:

Pipeline
Walk Don't Run
Sleepwalk
Ghost Riders in the Sky
Apache
Summertime-Moondance (medley)
Runaway
Rumble (Link Wray)

That's about half our playlist...I always end up running it through my head to work out new tweaks to the bass lines I play.

I've got a nice 1979 Johnny Mathis LP on the way :D
I wouldn't call a Mathis LP form the 70's a "prime" recording.
Mathis was a prime contender during 1956-1962.

-Are you referring to the LP, "The Best Days of My Life". Not exactly a best seller. The only redeeming cuts on there are "As Time Goes By", "Begin The Beguine" and his chart hit, the theme from "Same Time Next Year".

-The 70's Mathis LP that I own is from 1973, "I'm Coming Home".
Mathis teamed with producer, arranger and writer Thom Bell and lyricist Linda Creed. Both became very popular for their works with the Spinners, and the Stylistics. "Life Is a Song Worth Singing" and "Stop, Look, Listen to Your Heart" are two good tracks. The title track "I'm Coming Home" is the chart highlight of this LP. Nonetheless, all the tracks are good listening songs.

Nope, neither of them - it's the 1979 Mathis Magic with a completely charming disco version of 'That Old Black Magic'. I'll have to look out for I'm Coming Home though, thanks for the heads-up - Bell and Creed wrote some lovely pop-soul songs. I've got a brilliant version of 'Stop, Look Listen' by The New Birth, with some intense gospel-styled vocals that sound a world away from the sweetness of the Stylistics.

For this weekend

. . . is an LP of bootleg Lester Young recordings put out by Everest Records - found in a charity shop. All of the recordings come from illegal tapes at concerts or from taped radio broadcasts and contain all the standard crowd noise/poor sound of those formats. Great stuff.

Nice find! When/where are the concert recordings from? Who's he playing with?

There's no time/place info. Various small bands. Most of them sound like early 40s, and a couple of late 40s ones (perhaps JaTP). Easy to tell with Young since his style changed so much mid-40s.

There is a personnel list:

Young, Tenor
Jesse Drakes, Trumpet
Ted Kelley, Jerry Elliot, Trombone
Freddy Jefferson, John Lewis, Junior Mance, Piano
Tex Briscoe, Gene Ramey, Bass
Roy Haynes, Jo Jones, Drums

'Stop, Look Listen' is one of Creed & Bell's best tunes. The Mathis version is just that.... very "Mathis"...lush and romantic. I also have the Marvin Gaye & Diana Ross duet of that song, from their '73 album "Diana & Marvin". Their voices blend well together and their album is classic smooth 70's soul!
Mathis is still recording great music. I have his 2006 CD, "Isn't It Romantic".
It was up for several Grammys last year, but lost out to Tony Bennett's "The Art Of Romance".

I'll be listening to a CD I just burned.
All songs from the early 30s.
All Americans.

Fletcher Anderson
Leo Reisman
High Hatters
Russ Carlson

... can't get enough of them at the moment.

It's a little too smooth for me, and that pair are IMO two of the most overrated 'soul' singers I've ever heard. Gaye always wanted to be a crooner, and cited Nat 'King' Cole as a major influence, hardly the most emotive of singers. And Ross' thin, nasal voice has never impressed me.

I was hoping to pick up a couple of new soul reissues this weekend, but my local branch of HMV didn't stock them (I wasn't expecting them to anyway), and I didn't get time to visit my nearest soul specialist. Now these are what I call soul:

- Barbara & The Browns - Can't Find Happiness;
- Lee Moses - Time And Place

Barbara Brown is one of my favourite singers, with a rich voice that is at its best on pain-filled ballads. There is a sample of one of her best recordings on that link, Pity A Fool (not to be confused with the Bobby Bland song Pity The Fool), and I Don't Want To Have To Wait, If I Can't Run To You I'll Crawl and Can't Find No Happiness are even better.

Lee Moses has one of those raw, rasping voices to which Joe Cocker can only aspire. I have a few of the tracks on this CD on 45s, and I'm very excited about getting my hands on so much more of his stuff. Like Barbara Brown he excels on the ballads, and I'm Sad About It and - especially - What You Don't Want Me To Be are doom-laden, throat tearing, Deep Soul classics.

Lee Moses = The epitome of soul.

I have a vinyl rip of Time and Place, but it only has 11 tracks. Moses' version of "California Dreaming" is the most heart wrenching thing I've ever heard. I never fail to well up just a little bit when he hits that extended "Ohhhh" just after the first chorus .. "Free at Last" is another that just tears me to bits, it's so honest and hopeful, despite the feeling that there's a broken heart waiting just around the corner. And don't get me started on "Adorable One" .. whew.

That vinyl rip must have come from the rare-as-hens-teeth original album. Where did you get that?!

Oooo Manu Chao!

Mama was queen of the mambo
Papa was king of the Congo
Deep down in the jungle
I started bangin' my first bongo
Every monkey'd like to be
In my place instead of me
Cause I'm the king of bongo, baby
I'm the king of bongo bong
I went to the big town
Where there is a lot of sound
From the jungle to the city
Looking for a bigger crown
So I play my boogie
For the people of big city
But they don't go crazy
When I'm bangin' in my boogie
I'm the "king of the bongo, king of the bongo bong"
Hear me when I come
King of the bongo, king of the bongo bong
They say that I'm a clown
Making too much dirty sound
They say there is no place for little monkey in this town
Nobody'd like to be in my place instead of me
Cause nobody go crazy when I'm bangin' on my boogie
I'm the king of the bongo, king of the bongo bong
Hear me when I come
"King of the bongo, king of the bongo bong"
Bangin' on my bongo all that swing belongs to me
I'm so happy there's nobody in my place instead of me
I'm a king without a crown hanging loose in a big town
But I'm the king of bongo baby I'm the king of bongo bong
King of the bongo, king of the bongo bong
Hear me when I come, baby, king of the bongo, king of the bongo bong
