It arrived today and these pix are right out of the box guys. This lid needs some work. :eusa_doh: First off, it's a size 6 7/8 and very snug so after I snapped some pix it went straight to the stretcher. This is probably the widest brim I own @ 2 5/8", the Crown is 5 1/2" open and the ribbon is a whopping 2 1/4", I don't know if it's sewn funky along the top purposely, or if it's frayed like that.... the way the bow is starting to, maybe someone can answer that for me? The sweatband is 2". It has some damage to the edge of the brim, on the front right side if it were on your head. I have a close up of it. The silk lining seems to be in pretty good shape, so does the sweat, but it needs a good cleaning. here's some pics out of the box...

This is the actual color of the hat......

and here is that funky stitching on the ribbon, that I don't know if it's intentional or not? Look close along the top of the ribbon.....

I'll post a couple better shots after it's stretched & I have it cleaned up & bashed later on....thanks for lookin'. :D

I have that same kind of stitching on a '20s fedora of mine. It's supposed to be there. The bow's also supposed to be like that. Another period styling thing. Excellent, and very old hat. Don't change a thing

Mine has the same thread detail at the ribbon top and the bow they are supposed to be there.. It is a fantastic hat you lucky son of a gun. Don't do anything to this hat, it is in great shape and not an easy find! Great color too. Be care not to stretch it too much or you may snap some of the sweat threads.

Also beware of splitting the sweatband.

I do believe you have a museum piece, there. The liner alone is a work of art.

Wow, that's a nice one, Bolthead!

Some terrific details in that hat. Not that I'm an expert, but I've never seen a hat size imprinted on the sweatband like that. Nice little detail.

Looking forward to seeing it on you after the stretch!

Cheers,
Tom

Thanks Guys......

Can I ask the experts.....

What type of crease would normally be used in a hat of this era/orgin? It's a pretty tall Crown, over 5 1/4".

It came out of the box with a center crease and a front pinch (as you can see from the pics), would that be common/normal for this hat?

A deep center dent with side pinches is probably most accurate, but it's just a bash. Whatever you like best. I'm sure it shapes easily by hand.

That thing's a gem

I look forward to seeing pix after you
give it a proper brushing. Congrats.

We might need a name for hats of
this class- older than a certain point,
truly from a lost era of quality.

BTW, Cavanagh continued the tradition
of the frayed bow (and for that matter
the wide ribbon) for decades after that
hat was made. As long as the ribbon is
silk, it looks great. No question it was
made that way. Awesome.

That would certainly be a very interesting sweatband for a 1920s/early 30s hat. All of the ones i've seen/owned have more grain in the leather. [edit]I tell a lie. My 1930s Borsalino velour has this smooth textured leather sweat. Maybe it's a feature of the higher quality products?

Remember - style/trimmings tell you nothing about age. The only thing about this hat that makes me think it's early-ish is the paper size tag. But Borsalino was certainly using these up until the early 50s. At least for the UK/European market.

As promised.....

It sure is nice to hear all these positive comments.....here's what I came up with.

I went with a Diamond Bash......it seemed fitting.
Tullio12.jpg

Here's a couple with it on.....it still needs a bit more stretching, but I have to be careful.....:eusa_doh:

This is a very nice hat indeed. I wish I could find more history about it though.

That looks great.I'm a bit more partial to the center dent, but the diamond suits you well. Is that a hand reshape or did you use any steam? I think the "fuzzy" felt is an interesting touch especially with the wide ribbon.:eusa_clap

Thanks Sef.
I used steam to clean it, but I just hand bashed the diamond crease in it. I tried the center dent 1st but didn't like the way it sat on my head. I guess I just can't get used to the tall crown & that center crease really exaggerated it in my opinion. It really is quite fuzzy. :D

I also prefer the center dent- let's see it on your head!
But if I am to be honest, my velour Knox 20, the closest
thing I have to that hat, has a diamond bash...

Unique hat. Looks great.

Bolthead, I think the hat looks great.

However, I do think the ribbon looks too tight around the hat, such as seen in this picture of yours:

Tullio10.jpg

Forgive my ignorance if the hat is supposed to be like that, but I can't help but think the hat might do with a small adjustment of the ribbon.
