I drove past Ford City this evening. The cinema has been enlarged to
gargantuan proportion; almost unrecognizable from my high school days.

Well, in my day (late 1960s through the early 1990s) that mall was ugly enough to induce cataracts on the viewer! The original architecture was some tasteless 60's bastardized offspring of Frank Lloyd Wright's late work and the best remedy for it would have been a 5 alarm blaze. A blight on the landscape of an area that wasn't very aesthetic to begin with. Gangs had moved into the area by the time I left Chicago for good. Has it improved at all or has it become this eyesore of clashing bad taste from one era layered and superimposed upon another?

Ford City remains an eyesore; albeit profitable, with ancillary franchise
appendages proliferating around the edge. The local neighborhood
flanking Pulaki and Cicero avenues is a bit rough, but still home to a
lot of decent hardworking folk. I always thought that Nelson Algren
would have been as fascinated by the Southwest side as he was by
the Near North side.
