I've always thought that steamer trunks were kind of awesome. But I wonder...are they still practical luggage in today's jetsetting world?

In no way do they fit in the jetsetting world, but then again neither does getting felt up before you can get on a plane. This is more for ground based travel :p

Hi Nishnabota,

Yes you're right. Trunks like that these days would be restricted to train or automobile cross-country travel.

And the trunks that stand up on their ends with the coat-hangers and the drawers are called portmanteaux (sing. - 'Portmanteau'). I'm not aware that any are still made. You'd probably have to buy them antique/vintage.

Those are very cool. I'm sure some will roll their eyes but I always like the cases they use as props in the Harry Potter movies, most noticeably in the Prisoner of Azkaban that Prof. Lupin is packing to leave school. it seems so useful and practical of a way to store and use your clothing and items while away from home for an extended period of time. They really do harken back to an age when people took multimonth vacations by cruise ship. Of course, they would be little useful today for plane travel and I don't know many people that take month long cruises.
