I just watched Quadrophenia over the weekend. I haven't seen it in many years, but wouldn't it be great if the youth of America emulated that mod look again, Bespoke suits and stingy brims (although we could do without the parkas this time around).

Boo! Hiss! Go the rockers! Rockers! Rockers! lol lol lol

(Sorry, my misspent adolescence caught up with me there!)

I wonder what archeaologists 2000 years from now will think?

They'll say that ours was a very poor generation who couldn't afford decent clothing! I've also often imagined archaeologists of the future digging into the ground and marveling at the prolific number of giant golden M's they come across.

"Y'know, Brian, this must be the symbol of a major religion of the 20th and 21st centuries. It's everywhere. Do you concur?"

"I do indeed, Ellen [author's note: no sexism in the future]. It's a fascinating phenomenon."

I tend to give the teenagers leeway when it comes to fashion do's and don'ts. They are young, impressionable, and trying to find their identity. I can never understand the parents who let their child dress in ways that are inappropriate with regards to short skirts, thong fad, or low cut tops.

What boggles my mind are the adults who dress this way!! What inspires a grown man to wear a shirt that is 3XXX large and pants hung around his butt? Fashion be damned! At what point in life do you look in the mirror and say, "geez, I am too old for this stuff" :eusa_doh:
While I absolutely agree that adults have no excuse for dressing this way in public, I believe with kids/teenagers there is a line that should be drawn as well. I too give kids a little leeway since they are young and usually tastes do mature but what really bothers me is seeing girls walking around town dressed like street hookers! They are too immature for the attention they are creating . In the end though, it is the parents I get mad at since they are the one's buying these outfits for their children .

lol I see this sort of 'scene' more often than I ever care too! Unfortunately, the guys who sport this kind of look when bending don't exactly have the most admirable body types either!

Actually the real hookers have to dress even more bluntly...downtown Portland, you can clearly see who's dressing like Britney Spears, and who's selling their stuff
I like kids to hold on to their childhood as long as possible...I know for most of us we couldn't wait to grow up but, sometimes I think the media's pushing them too fast

I find children's fashion alarming these days, I don't know what it's like in the US but it's common to see 9-10 year old girls dressed up like street whores over here. The endless TV exposure to semi-naked women on rap videos seems to be the driver, but it's very noticeable, and at the same time, the society is in a moral panic about paedophiles, but apparently deems that there is no connection between these two facts.

I don't know if there is a connection between kids dressing like hookers and paedophilia but the sexualization of young children is a tragedy.

We may indeed be turning a corner...at least in my small corner of the world. I saw a kid actually wearing his ballcap sideways, and a pair of loud Hawaiian print boxer shorts OUTSIDE of his baggy gangster pants, walking down the street with his 'homies' in one of the small towns near me this past week.

How are we 'turning the corner? A couple car loads of his 'peers' drove by and made fun of him and the way he was dressed. Now, if his OWN peers were making fun of him, I'm hoping things are looking up......but then again, I couldn't see how the kids in the CAR were dressed. ;)

Dr.Strange, I thought the article was perceptive and quite well done. In Hilton's case it makes me think she's almost saying, "I have the power to even make trash look good." Most of us, however, know that you don't have to walk through a sewer do know it stinks...

Around my area I'm seeing a lot less of this "Gangsta" kind of thing and a lot more of the "Emo" look lately. That probably has a lot to do with the cold weather...

It amazes me what people will wear to fit in with others. I go to a local mall and I feel a bit like I'm in some kind of a zombie or cult movie or something. I refuse to believe (perhaps for my own sanity) that amount of people really do think what they wear looks good.

My sister looks shocked when I bring a new piece of clothing home. "Are you REALLY going to wear that?" she'll say. Even my mother has stated she wouldn't want to be seen with me wearing a Fedora out.

Beyond just the clothes the trashy behavior of people my age disgusts me. This kind of thing is to make you more attractive to the opposite sex? A little class goes a long way with me. I wish it wasn’t so hard to find people who feel the same way.

In my teens my peers laughed at me - or in extreme cases wanted to hit me - for wearing vintage clothes. Being mocked by the straights is a rite of passage.

And we should all remember that teenagers aren't dressing to impress us. They're doing what teenagers have been doing ever since youth cults first appeared in the 1950s: annoying those older than them. They seem to be succeeding as well.
