Tourist cabins, auto and motor courts

The original painting is in the collection of American regional art at the Denver Art Museum. I may check it out, seeing how I’m a member and as such I don’t need to reach for my wallet before entering.
EDIT: Now I’m unsure as to where the original painting is housed as I’m reading conflicting reports. Is it in the American Museum of Western Art, which is also in Denver and is purported to have some affiliation with DAM? Or is it in the Smithsonian? I’ll figure it out.

I thought so, too, although Curry isn’t my favorite of the American regionalists.

There’s a lot going on in this painting. Note the men, and men only, gathered around the fire, while the women, in the cabins, are tending to “womanly” tasks. The children, those older than infants, are free to play.

What little I know of Curry has me doubting he was making a statement about stringent gender roles, leastwise not a disapproving one.

Another great movie if you like tourist cabins:

In addition to being one of the all-time great dark-horses in the category of Film Noir, They Live by Night is chock full of tourist cabins!!! The movie centers around a desperate young couple who end up holed up in the mountains in a retreat called the Lambert Inn Cabins. The final scene has them at the Prairie Plaza Motel in Cabin #8.

I have two personal connections to this one.

First, my wife and I stayed in Cabin #8 at some tourist cabins in the mountains of North Georgia when we were young. We found out that the State of Georgia had a waiting period for couples wishing to elope, so we drove across the state line into North Carolina and payed 40 dollars for a wedding at the first courthouse we could find. Sweet deal! And very much in keeping with the couple in this movie.

Second, the actress in this one, Cathy O'Donnell is literally the girl-next-door; she was the daughter of a school teacher at a mill village just a few miles from my home. One of the most underrated actresses ever, of this genre.

And check out Jay C. Flippen's lid !!! (I couldn't resist)
