Matt, there is no simple explanation as far as history, political, social, kultural, racial, gender history is concerned :)

Steve & Steve:
I see - My desire for simple, direct and "logical" explanation just does not always match.
I thank you for all the additions and for stimulating of my confused thoughts.

This is the second top hat I bought via Facebook Market Place last week. The first was too large, this one too small. I knew that though when I bought them. I wanted them for other reasons.

I've already posted the one too large: the Franz Gulder of Vienna.

This one is from the oldest, stil in existence hat shop in Denmark, Petitgas in Copenhagen.

Moleskin treatment with a leather sweat. Both of which suggest that this was an every day wear topper as opposed to an evening wear top hat.

The lettering on the label lead me to believe this is pre WWI, quite probably pre 1910. I also believe that it was made by
M. Petitgas himself, or it least made in his shop.

Well spotted, Matt. I've attached a photo of the logo of my Lincoln & Bennett alongside the London Manufactory one. They're quite similar, I must say.
Though it has to be said that the lion and the unicorn crest was popular among various manufacturers as it symbolizes the UK. The lion being England, the unicorn Scotland.

Note to self: remember to attach photos :)

Here they are, plus one other top hat I have with the lion and unicorn label. View attachment 326712

Steve, I found another logo that looks exactly like yours:

Thanks for that, Matt. Wonderful looking liner. What hat does it belong to?

The logo was pretty ubiquitous. A sign of British quality every maker could more or less use regardless of the quality of their hats.
It's the liner logo Sools used for their hats.

Another local find. Hans H. Holm top hat. That's the first one I find using the store logo on the liner. I know it was also a hattefabrikk, but unsure whether toppers could be made in house too. I have seen several, mostly English and French, imported though. Size is a foul 57 and it should date before '25, when Christiania became Oslo. I am guessing 10s to early 20s. Interestingly, the guy I bought it from, told me that his grandfather got married in 1920, it could have been bought for the occasion! Doesn't seem it was worn much either.

It came with velvet pad and an after market, later hard case

Most probably the original case was the same, as with my other one

I’m surprised that this Hückel hasn’t sold. I think the price is fair for a larger size hat and I would have bought it long ago if it was a bit bigger.

Brent, Super! I have a couple similar JHS Silk Top Hats but in a smaller size.

They are really nice because of the ribbon / bow which is not common for Silk Top Hats. May I ask where it's posted?

Panos, Great find! As you mentioned it's in fantastic condition which is not common with old Silk Top Hats. I really like the Black Silk liner with Moire effect at the top portion.

Here you go, Steve. I’d have bought it if it was larger:

Even though I knew this one was far too small for me, I just had to have it in the collection for several reasons: it's a well made top hat in very good condition, more than likely English made, moleskin, ca.1920s, maybe even pre or ca. WWI, broad brown leather sweat, so an every day top hat as opposed to a special occassion topper, and the final icing on the cake, for me at least, it was sold in the town where I now live in Denmark.
I'll vist the local museum to see if they have more information about Hr. Lorentzen who took over the business from Hr. Perrot.

14 cm crown. 4.5cm brim to the curl. Really nice brim curve. So wish it was my size. Still, it's a keeper.
